Hagel: Hezbollah could acquire Syria’s chemical weapons

hezbollah supporters wave syrian flagsFacing down skeptical questioning by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Obama administration may have won the support it sought for a limited strike on Syria.

Late Tuesday, NBC News obtained a draft of a new bipartisan Syria resolution by Committee Chairman Bob Menendez and Ranking Member Bob Corker. The draft approves the use of military force in Syria, and sets a 60-day deadline, allowing for one 30-day extension. It prohibits the use of ground forces.

โ€œTogether we have pursued a course of action that gives the President the authority he needs to deploy force in response to the Assad regimeโ€™s criminal use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people, while assuring that the authorization is narrow and focused, limited in time, and assures that the Armed Forces of the United States will not be deployed for combat operations in Syria,โ€ Senator Menendez said in a statement.

The panel will begin mark-up on the draft on Wednesday and could vote on it; it would then go to the full Senate for a vote after Sept. 9, when members return from recess.
Senators at the Tuesday hearing pushed the Obama administration to explain how a strike on Syria serves U.S. interests, and what the endgame of any intervention would be.

Secretary of State John Kerry told the committee that American credibility would be hurt worldwide if the country chooses to do nothing in the face of President Bashar al-Assadโ€™s use of chemical weapons. โ€œThis is not the time to be spectators to slaughter,โ€ he said.

โ€œI think that itโ€™s fair to say that our interest would be seriously set back in many respects if we are viewed as not capable, or willing, most important, to follow through on the things that we say matter to us,โ€ said Kerry, who testified alongside Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

โ€œWe would be opening Pandoraโ€™s box with respect to a whole set of dangerous consequences as a result of the United States not keeping its word. And it would make our life very, very difficult with respect to North Korea and Iran,โ€ Kerry said. โ€œThereโ€™s no question in my mind that those countries are watching. The mullahs and many others are watching what we are doing now with great interest. And thatโ€™s why even the quality of this debate and the nature of this debate are very important.โ€

The Obama administration has said its intelligence shows Syrian President Assad turned chemical weapons against his own people, killing at least 1,429 people, including more than 400 children, on Aug. 21. Over the weekend the president called on Congress to authorize a โ€œlimitedโ€ strike on Syria. A year ago, Obama said that Syriaโ€™s use of chemical weapons would be a โ€œred line.โ€ He never specified how America would respond if that line were crossed.

Like Kerry, Hagel also argued the mission is in Americaโ€™s interest, saying the Syrian regimeโ€™s use of chemical weapons poses โ€œgrave risksโ€ to Americaโ€™s allies along Syriaโ€™s borders, including Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.

โ€œIf Assad is prepared to use chemical weapons against his own people, we have to be concerned that terrorist groups like Hezbollah, which has forces in Syria supporting the Assad regime, could acquire them,โ€ said Hagel.

Republican Sen. James Risch of Idaho was unconvinced. โ€œI am reluctantโ€ to sign on, he said, adding: โ€œIf this was an attack against any American, against any American interest, this would be a no-brainer for me.โ€ He said heโ€™s concerned that after a limited strike Assad will โ€œcrawl out of his rat holeโ€ and tell his people he stood up to the strongest power on earth and โ€œweโ€™re going to go on with business as usualโ€ฆWhat does that do to our credibility?โ€

Similarly, Marco Rubio of Florida said heโ€™s a โ€œbit skepticalโ€ about the effectiveness of limited strikes and also feared Assad may feel more powerful if he endures a U.S. military assault.

Kerry insisted โ€œthat there is no way it will in fact be beneficial for him. That will not translate on the ground.โ€

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentuckyโ€“a staunch non-interventionistโ€“argued there are too many unknowns, that Assad is already acting irrationally and it may not deter another chemical weapons attack. Kerry replied that taking no action โ€œis a guarantee Assad will do it again.โ€

syria chemical weaponsSenator Menendez asked Kerry if the White House was open to a ban on U.S. ground troops being deployed. โ€œI donโ€™t want to take off the table an option that might or might not be available to a president of the United States to secure our country,โ€ said Kerry, in the event that Syria imploded or if chemical weapons got into the hands of terrorist groups.

The secretary of state then seemed to backtrack. Kerry said he wanted to โ€œshut that door as tightly as we can,โ€ and that the scenarios he gave were merely hypothetical. โ€œThere will not be American boots on the ground with respect to the civil war,โ€ Kerry insisted.

Sen. John McCain, who has been in favor of military intervention, helped Kerry shore up his case. If Congress rejects a resolution, he asked, would that send a โ€œseriously bad message to our friends an allies alike?โ€ Kerry said it would.

โ€œI cannot emphasize enough how much they are looking to us now, making judgments about us for the long term, and how critical the choice we make here will be,โ€ said Kerry.

President Obama got a boost from GOP leaders, including House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who both said they would support the presidentโ€™s request to strike Syria. Key Dems, including Sen. Harry Reid, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are also supporting Obama on Syria.

Now could you please answer this honestly, and when you have answered this could tell me why? what brought you to this answer? The questions are: Why are Muslim countries so f___ked up? Why are christian countries so wonderful compared to muslim countries? Why do you live in a country based on Christianity?

        1. Greetings Jan, If my answer is important to you I will gladly try to answer it.

like most people I have been subjected to many betrayals and tragedies in my life caused mostly by white people professed to be Christians ! does that mean I hate whites and Christians? NO I am white and Christian myself but am NOT a believer that the core of the problem is based on race or religion alone! I would not dispute the fact that I would not want to live in a moslem country or that in general terrorism is mostly caused by moslem extremists, however I refuse to generalize as most people do that all moslems are terrorists or all Chinese cant drive lol, I aim to live up to the fact that jesus blood was spilled on behalf of AII man kind as decendants of Adam.
If I was born in Italy I would likely be catholic
If I was born in Tehran I would likely be shia
If I was born in india I would likely be hindu
If I was born in Israel I would likely jewish
My point is that not all religions can possibly lead to a conduct or a standard in harmony with god or his principles with so many conflicting different results !
All of us no matter where we are born or to what religion we belong to must ask ourselves if we are dating the true god and if he would approve of us having so much contempt for one another simply based on ethnicity or faith, only he can know what is in our heart and if we are true followers we ought to set an example in how we view one another and conduct ourselves in a way that brings glory to god and how he transformed us from being violent or racists to being neutral and not so quick to judge and condemn!
I did not allways feel this way but the truth is I am turned off violence of any kind whether it is moslems killing moslems or so called chrtistians killing Christians, I am simply NOt impressed by any group unless they are capable of putting a higher value on life ALL life above real estate with a beloved flag or sect of some sort. I am capable of loving good people from any ethnicity or religion if they are indeed good people not on a mission to hurt others but are simply trying to provide an care for their families….many moslem people as Christians are simply just trying to do just that! why should I lump them with the ones out to terrorize?

          1. Jan Bowman Avatar

You claim many muslims are good people then why are their countries f__ked up?? Many to me means over 50% and if that were the case; as you claim many muslims good people then one could say from your statement muslim countries are great countries to live in. But that’s not the case is it???? Muslims move to christian based countries and what do they do?? I think you are capable of answering that. So basically there is one simple answer the questions I are asked you (where you beat around the bush without answering (I guess you were being political)) MUSILIM PEOPLE!!!

          2. Leborigine Avatar

Countries are not fu%$ed entirely because of its people Jan. I agree with you that most muslim countries are screwed but there are some good ones too. I hate to admit it but Turkey has a good system and so does Azerbaijan. The problem is with the tribal system and lack of education. Lebanon is a very good example, as well as syria where leaders remain leaders for half a century and then hand it down to their children and so on. Bashar was not elected to the seat, he inherited it, the same with many Lebanese leaders.
The freedom to explore and express your mind is not allowed in those countries as well. Australia, US and many European countries do not allow religion to interfere with politics and they are more diverse than arab or muslim countries in religion and race, yet they run like clockwork and everyone respects each other, all due to being educated and free to speak their minds.

I am not an expert on Azerbaijan, but I did travel there last year and it is pretty civilised. Then they took the calf [for worship] after clear evidences had come to them, and We pardoned that. And We gave Moses a clear authority. (153) And We raised over them the mount for [refusal of] their covenant; and We said to them, “Enter the gate bowing humbly”, and We said to them, “Do not transgress on the sabbath”, and We took from them a solemn covenant. (154) And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, “Our hearts are wrapped”. Rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few. (155) And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander, (156) And [for] their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them.
