Suleiman: Lebanon must stem flow of fighters to Syria

Share:

suleiman in ivory coast 2Lebanon must prevent fighters from crossing into Syria, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said after Damascus threatened to respond to cross-border infiltrations.

Suleiman made the remarks while meeting with the Lebanese community in the Ivory Coast during an official visit, according to a statement from his office on Saturday.

Lebanon’s stability depends “on all of us… not sending militants to Syria and not receiving them,” he said, adding “we must commit ourselves to neutrality.”

Suleiman said he had tasked Lebanon’s army with “the arrest of any militants intending to fight (in Syria), whether for the opposition or not.”

His comments came after Syria warned on Thursday that its forces would fire into Lebanon if “terrorist gangs” continued to infiltrate the country.

“These past 36 hours, armed terrorist gangs have infiltrated Syrian territory in large numbers from Lebanon,” the Syrian foreign ministry said, in a message quoted by official news agency SANA.

“Syrian forces are showing restraint by not striking these gangs inside Lebanese territory to prevent them crossing into Syria, but this will not go on indefinitely,” it said in a message to its Lebanese counterpart.

A Lebanese government source, speaking to AFP on Saturday, said Beirut took the warning “very seriously” and that “intensive consultations are underway to find the best way to control the border.”

Lebanon’s opposition March 14th movement, which opposes the Damascus regime, has called for the army to deploy along the country’s border with Syria to halt the flow of arms and militants, and protect Lebanese territory.

Beirut has officially pledged neutrality in the violence engulfing its neighbor, but has found itself increasingly embroiled in the civil war.

Lebanon’s opposition backs the revolt, which entered its third year on Friday, while the Shiite Hezbollah and its allies stand by the regime.

Violence has already spilled over into Lebanon on several occasions, causing fatalities on the Lebanese side, and on Thursday the UN Security Council expressed “grave concern” about cross-border attacks.

I just laugh when he lectures people on democracy as if his own election was really constitutional or democratic.

What is he supposed to do? Look pretty and say nothing? That was the taef and the Syrian hegemony and its effect on the presidency to weaken the Christians…

these are exactly the same ones you support today: hariri and geagea; i remember dr pierre dekkache from hadath telling me how they went there and how he escaped from the hotel (in taef) to the airport; the lebanese mp’s were jailed in the hotel and had no way to leave before they voted on the taef accord; the funniest thing he told me was on the plane leaving beirut: george saade the president of the phalangist party at that time and ally of samir geagea received a phone call from ghazi kenaan (i hope you know who is ghazi kenaan) he called georges saade, fakhamet al ra’is, i.e they promised geagea and georges saade that saade will be president of the republic if he votes for the taef accord; they were duped and they got a suppository; dr pierre dekkache was the only one who did not vote for the accord because he could escape…mind you sir it is wrong to say syrian effect; that was purely saoudi effect and syria was being paid at that time by saudi arabia to protect the sunna in Lebanon and to make taef accord pass….

I don’t know how I fell on this comment 3 years later but I know Dr Pierre Daccache and I am sure this is not something he would have said nevertheless I would challenge anyone who could confirm this stupidity… The MPs went to Taef with the approval of Aoun who was in touch with them until the last day. They were not imprisoned in any hotel and they were free to leave and everyone who voted on this agreement knew exactly what he was doing and why. The purpose was to end the massacres happening in Lebanon and the killings between brothers. Georges Saade is smarter than believing that he could become a President after 2 Kataeb presidents (Bachir and Amine Gemayel). The Maronites MPs all of them know that he actually worked hard to make sure Christian MPs attend Rene Mouawad’s elections to make sure he has Christian legitimacy and this is exactly why he ran for Presidential elections. I cannot believe that 25 years after the TAEF agreement people still talk about this bullshit and still try to pass it as reality when everything got uncovered. Man people go get a life. And just for the record Georges Saade and Ghazi Kanaan were never on good terms. Just read history: boycotting 1992 elections, Georges Saade lost 1996 elections in the mostly renowned electoral fraud ever seen in the country because personally Ghazi Kanaan didn’t want him to win, 1991 Kataeb MPs voted against agreement of brotherhood and friendship cooperation between Syria and Lebanon, then the Kataeb Ministers (Saade and Dib) voted against this same agreement in the government. So please, review history before talking nonesense. The guy wrote a book explaining what happened and Daccache personally never denied the facts. 30 years later and still this??? Don’t you have a life???

honestly, i think the nature of the president determines the future; when lahoud was elected, we were best friends, i told him when we were half drunk: so bad for lebanon, it means Lebanon wont get out for the time being; for if they found “ahmar minnak ma kenou jebouk” he laughed at it, but he knew very well i meant it. If usa wanted Lebanon to get out strong they would have brought a strong president like aoun or late hobeika not a kess like this one or my friend lahoud; sorry emile

Resistance speaks for itself with its actions and accomplishments, and it does not care for the opinion of those who have opposed it all along. Throughout history,no resistance ever obtained a consensus to operate and defend its occupied land, and this one is no different. It is a fact that every cabinet formed ,since 1990, have recognized and approved the resistance’s rights to operate.Until a cabinet denies them this right, you better accept it and live with it.

well it is not only in Lebanon; politics is rotten in general but we notice it more in Lebanon because there, things are accelerated because of war; a famous philosopher whose name escapes me right now ( i drank a couple of arak with meshwi) said, i will say it in french: La guerre est la politique a chaud”. It means war is when politics go fast… bush inherited his father now the other son, kennedy……..

The thought of another Bush is scary. George W. was brought in by the republicans when no new republican leadership was emerging during Clinton years. After loosing two elections to Obama with the leadership they presented to the American Public, they might dig into their history books, and present another name brand(with no history to defend). It worked the first time, and it could work again.BTW,American people did like George Bush 1,and most felt bad for him after loosing to Clinton.
This whole scheme was orchestrated in 1997(after Bob Dole failed to beat Clinton) by a Washington right wing institution,The Center for Security Policy ;run by former CIA/pentagon officials, and other christian fanatics, lead by the likes of Frank Gaffney, and financed by Military Industry. It is one of the most influential institutions in Washington even though it does not get much publicity.

people will revolt only when their children are hungry; nothing else would make people go to the street unless driven by some kind of fanatical esoteric salafi like belief of life in djinnah where they will have sex with houryyat…. what the west have done to go around this point are the cheap brands which are not advertised for; you can have a 2 liters cocacola (brand name not the original one) for 20p in London, a kilo of butter for 14 p, a chocomax 250 gram for 8; white bread for 28 p….for a pound you can have food for your family per week; dont ask me what you are eating though; there is an old french movie i advise everyone to watch, by Louis de Funes called l’aile ou la cuisse; you can find it on you tube. aspartame is one of the many edulcorants available; now it was never really proven to cause anything; i still remember an old experiment done with saccharine; they gave kilos of saccharine to a mouth and they concluded it produces bladder cancer; this is tentamount putting a ton of sugar in your coffee if you adjust for the difference in weight; there is nowadays a new sweetener, called stevia, extracted from a plant; actually i have some of these plants growing in my garden; it is natural, it tastes exactly like sugar and is not altered by cooking…..sugar itself is a poison, especially the white refined crystals you buy; drinking cane juice is sweet but it is not like having this sucrose concentrated and crystallised; the biggest cheat when they tell you eat honey, it is more natural, or fructose from fruits, which is powder but not crystals (just no added calcium molecules) but all end up metabolised into the monosaccharide glucose which is stored in the body; fructose anf glucose have same formula but are isomers….some believe fructose is healthier; wrong, fructose, even though derived from sugar and is also found in honey, it increases blood glycemia (glucose level) as much as glucose; it is responsible for the metabolic syndrome(obesity); some people even speak of sugar addiction, people craving for sugar.
One last thing, fructose from fruit, under the effect of yeasts which constitute the normal intestinal flora, is fermented into alcohol; scotch uses fructose from malt and onions; bourbon from corn……..thus many speak of natural alcohol production which is inevitably produced in the stomach when you eat fruits like dates (high concentration of fructose) thus rendering obsolete the philosophy of alcohol is haram, because the creator himself designed the body in such a way that any sugar you ingest is fermented by natural yeasts into infinitesimal amounts of alcohol that is constantly present in your bowels hence absorbed. Last but not least, a minimal amount of alcohol, the equivalent of one scotch a day, has been proven scientifically to protect you from cardiovascular disease by improving the radio of HDL to LDL cholesterol ie increasing the good HDL and decreasing the bad LDL, an effect comparable to doing daily exercise; the problem is to limit yourself to this low dose, because if you exceed then the effect will be opposite and alcohol will have a deleterious effect on your health; “kalilon mina al khamr yon3ishou kalba al insaan” said the creator. One last word about red wine, which seems to have extra beneficial health effects because of the tannins in it giving it its red colour to such an extent that tannin tablets have been commercialised……

nope but when i buy cheese, which i love (vin, pain, boursin…translated as wine, bread and cheese) i try to buy the low fat ones; less tasty but healthier; now one should not be duped by composite things where it is written light or diet; they either say low sugar but increase the fat or they say low fat but increase the sugar to keep the taste; so read well the label. One last warning is about trans fat; these are real poisons and are carcinogenic…

I like your thoughts on food …. here’s a bit more of value … the info is out there, but people need to be interested. Education is about learning how to look – not being programmed.

Fat-free salad dressings are a perfect example of good food gone bad. Salad dressing is the perfect combination of vinegar (which helps control blood sugar) and plant oils (full of essential fatty acids and sometimes antioxidants). However, an irrational fear of dietary fats has forced food companies to mess around with this perfect blend. The resulting fat-free salad dressings have introduced sugar and high fructose corn syrup, un-pronounceable emulsifying agents, and other food science secrets used to make the unnatural seem natural.

I think you’d agree with me that as bad as things are in Lebanon, we still have some freedom to criticize leaders and public officials, and we all consider that to be precious. As of why I attacked/criticized the president? why not?Are we supposed to refrain from criticizing some one because He is our president? Isn’t this what Mubarak ,Qadafi, Assad , the so called King of Hijaz ,and the rest of Arab league of dictators expect from their citizens? Since when speaking one’s mind is attacking? To answer my own question;Yes ,in dictatorships it is considered so,and punished by prison or death( beheading in some places).
I didn’t attack him in an insulting or demeaning way.I simply thought that taking these trips at the expense of the people are waste of money when He is supposed to do what you are asking me to do,which is figure out a way of solving the contries problems and putting out ideas that build nations. As for his presidency, we all know that there is constitutional questions about it,so why consider mentioning as an attack? As for his lack of power, we know He has little of that, and it is due to the Taeif agreement which I never thought it served Lebanon well, except that it put a temporary stop to the civil war,and it was a way of getting rid of Aoun, and setting the stage,by pleasing Assad, for the the liberation of Kuwait and boxing in Saddam. So my point was that He should not make statments that He has no power of enforcing.
As for the Arrows, I didn’t realize you became so serious, however, it was you who expected them by putting your Helmet on.lol.

these are exactly the same ones you support today: hariri and geagea; i remember dr pierre dekkache from hadath telling me how they went there and how he escaped from the hotel (in taef) to the airport; the lebanese mp’s were jailed in the hotel and had no way to leave before they voted on the taef accord; the funniest thing he told me was on the plane leaving beirut: george saade the president of the phalangist party at that time and ally of samir geagea received a phone call from ghazi kenaan (i hope you know who is ghazi kenaan) he called georges saade, fakhamet al ra’is, i.e they promised geagea and georges saade that saade will be president of the republic if he votes for the taef accord; they were duped and they got a suppository; dr pierre dekkache was the only one who did not vote for the accord because he could escape…mind you sir it is wrong to say syrian effect; that was purely saoudi effect and syria was being paid at that time by saudi arabia to protect the sunna in Lebanon and to make taef accord pass….

honestly, i think the nature of the president determines the future; when lahoud was elected, we were best friends, i told him when we were half drunk: so bad for lebanon, it means Lebanon wont get out for the time being; for if they found “ahmar minnak ma kenou jebouk” he laughed at it, but he knew very well i meant it. If usa wanted Lebanon to get out strong they would have brought a strong president like aoun or late hobeika not a kess like this one or my friend lahoud; sorry emile

You,as always, have attempted to divert the discussion to another place where I feel that I don’t need to keep repeat myself. You simply failed (or avoided) to address any of the points I raised.
Resistance speaks for itself with its actions and accomplishments and it does not care for the opinion of those who have opposed it all along. Throughout history,no resistance ever obtained a consensus to operate and defend its occupied land, and this one is no different, but at least every cabinet ,since 1990, have recognized and approved the resistance’s rights to operate.Until a cabinet denies them this right, you better accept it and live with it.

well it is not only in Lebanon; politics is rotten in general but we notice it more in Lebanon because there, things are accelerated because of war; a famous philosopher whose name escapes me right now ( i drank a couple of arak with meshwi) said, i will say it in french: La guerre est la politique a chaud”.

This whole scheme was orchestrated in 1997(after Bob Dole failed to beat Clinton) by a Washington right wing;run by former CIA/pentagon officials, and other christian fanatics, lead by the likes of Frank Gaffney, and financed by Military Industry. It is one of the most influential institutions in Washington even though it does not get much publicity.

well, bush father was a catastrophe; he is the one who gave the green light to assad to take all over Lebanon; now, if you look deeply, foreign policy does not differ much between a president and another; obama is pursuing same agenda as bush with a major difference, he hides it better and radical muslims, salafis, geagea3is and hariri supporters think he is helpng and supporting them while instead of helping them he is putting a soothing suppository in them

aspartame is one of the many edulcorants available; now it was never really proven to cause anything; i still remember an old experiment done with saccharine; they gave kilos of saccharine to a mouth and they concluded it produces bladder cancer; this is tentamount putting a ton of sugar in your coffee if you adjust for the difference in weight; there is nowadays a new sweetener, called stevia, extracted from a plant; actually i have some of these plants growing in my garden; it is natural, it tastes exactly like sugar and is not altered by cooking…..sugar itself is a poison, especially the white refined crystals you buy; drinking cane juice is sweet but it is not like having this sucrose concentrated and crystallised; the biggest cheat when they tell you eat honey, it is more natural, or fructose from fruits, which is powder but not crystals (just no added calcium molecules) but all end up metabolised into the monosaccharide glucose which is stored in the body; fructose anf glucose have same formula but are isomers….

Now if you only see some benefit in replying ,but avoiding the points I raised, I wonder why do we ever debate.I did reply back because I respect your intelligence(little arrow:not your temper. lol) as well.
