karami father omar , son faisalFormer Prime Minister Omar Karami declared on Friday that the assault on the convoy of his son Sports and Youth Minister Faisal Karami in Tripoli was purely an accident.

“We are sure that what happened was a mistake by the armed men ,” Karami was quoted as saying in a press conference Friday afternoon.

The former PM said that neither he nor his son accuse any party of carrying out this attack.

“We will not prosecute anyone, nor do we hold any [party] responsible.” the former PM said

Faisal Karami’s convoy came under fire in the northern city of Tripoli, leaving four of his bodyguards wounded and a security patrol car riddled with bullets, medics and witnesses have said.

Karami appeared to be unhurt according to the reports

A Reuters reporter said one of the convoy’s patrol cars was set ablaze.

The wounded bodyguards were identified as Ali Baradei, Jamal Khaled al-Hassan, Mohammed Sayyour, and Ali Ahmed Mahmoud.

In an interview with OTV, a local TV channel, in the aftermath of the attack, Karami said he felt he was not the target of the attack, but rather that “the unrest aims at targeting the country’s security situation”.

He said that the convoy was passing in the area when several cars came under gunfire.

“I think the unrest aims at targeting the country’s security situation,” Karami pointed out.

Voice of Lebanon radio reported that the incident took place after Karami’s bodyguards exchanged fire with several protesters participating in a sit-in in whichthey were demanding the release of several Islamists detained in Lebanese prisons.

After Friday’s incident, the army deployed near Karami’s house in al-Maarad neighborhood in an effort to enhance security.

The port city of Tripoli has become increasingly volatile in recent months, due to the civil war in neighbouring Syria.

Residents of Sunni-dominated Bab al Tabbaneh and Alawite-majority Jabal Mohsen have clashed frequently, heightening fears that the war is spilling over into Lebanon.

So … speaking of this stupid ‘accident’ …. and the lack of news about ALL it’s on-going effects on the general non-idiot population who’s nerves are shot:
An older man ( a visitor- not used to usual Tripoli Friday-tactics and fireworks ) with the young son of a friend in hand, stepped into the street and began walking – seeking a taxi to drive them home … unfortunately just minutes before all the idiots started shooting.

The young boy is safe … although still crying and definitely traumatized – unsettled also by being passed about for a while by various medical people until another friend could collect him … but the man had had a heart attack over the whole ‘accidental matter’ and dropped there in the ‘street of noise’ … We’re not sure how long he and the boy laid there before being collected.
He’s still alive, it seems … but the prognosis is as yet unknown.
One hopes that because this was a ‘Government-connected accident’, his treatment will be paid for …..
Nice they are ‘enhancing security’ … somewhere …

Also interesting this article doesn’t mention the machine guns and the hand-grenade that ‘The Daily Star’ does … along with 11 wounded ….
