Charbel wants to be Lebanon’s next president

Share:

Lebanon Interior Minister Marwan Charbel revealed to As Safir newspaper in remarks published on Friday that he is ready to run for the presidency after the term of President Michel Suleiman ends in 2014.

I am ready to be the next president “if I was asked, and they all agreed on my candidacy… But I refuse to be a president who has no power to make decisions ” Charbel said

He stressed that any candidate running for a post in the public sector should enjoy the two main characteristics of boldness in taking a decision and the ability to implement it.

I guess that Mr. Charbel should throw his hat into the ring. I wish him luck and I support his candidacy if the only other alternatives are Kahwaji whi would be an unconstitutional candidate, again; Franjieh whose primary allegiance is to a foreign power or Gen Aoun who is not qualified to become a president.

    1. It might still be a bit early for candidates a year is a long time in politics but he has made a distinct and important point in saying in saying only if he has the ability in making decisions ziad baroud is a classic example he resigned because of that exact point…..unfortunately the presidency has become a token position it seems to be all about the pm now since Hariri….

Ghassan, Happy New Year, and welcome back. I’m opposed to military leaders becoming presidents  period. But can you explain to me why Kahwji’s candidacy is unconstitutional?
As for Franjeieh, He is not qualified anyway, and his allegiance to foreign powers is not greater than most Lebanese so called leaders.,But Charbel for president? I hope it is not out of desperation that you’d support such candidacy? The guy proved to be such a low weight in  a number of circumstances;Negotiating with Road blocker, negotiating with Hashish growers, and negotiating with every low life law breaker in the country. He seems to run his mouth much faster than He can think. I would be more embarrassed to have him as a president than My embarrassment of the current one.

Kahwaji is the Chief of the Lebanese Army and constitutionally he is not allowed to run , just like President Suleiman whose election to office is unconstitutional. Franjieh carries too much baggage, he was a war lord, he was involved in drugs, he has a strong relationship to Bashar Assad and I do not believe that he is qualified. Charbel is obviously a light weight but if these three are to be the final choices then Charbel has demonstrated some personal integrity and has acted as a normal human being that does not live for the trappings of power that seem to be very important in Lebanon. In the final analysis the Presidency is not that important in Lebanon anylonger although it is a tad above being solely ceremonial.

Ghassan, Very true about Suleiman, and I remember We had a discussion about his election before, But as far as Kahwaji, I thought He was about to retire, and in this case His candidacy would be constitutional, wouldn’t it be?. If He stays on as head of the Army via some extension , and then a “convenient” amendment is passed in Parliament to allow him to run, then it would be a repeat of Suleiman’s election.

Mr Karam, what do you mean by General Aoun is not qualified to become a president ??? are you kidding me ??? if there is a person who is qualified for presidency it is Aoun. He will definitely bring the power back to the president and cancel the sunni/Harriri backed Taif accord. This will be a blessing to Lebanon and to sunnis who are marginalized now and the Ultimate dictator is the de facto president of the country.

Charbel is not qualified to be minister. Do you think he is doing a good job as a minister? every time there is a serious problem he admits that he cannot do anything about it. If you cannot do your job then you should be fired. Not promoted to be president?
