Iran FM denies military presence in Lebanon, Syria

Iran’s foreign ministry on Monday denied remarks by the Revolutionary Guards commander-in-chief that members of the country’s military forces were present in Syria and Lebanon, according to Arabic language Al Alam television.

In comments published by Iranian media on Sunday, Mohammad Ali Jafari said members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) were providing non-military assistance in Syria and Lebanon, adding that Tehran might get involved militarily in Syria if its closest ally came under attack.

“Reports by some Arabic and Western media, citing … Jafari were selective, false and with political aims,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told Iran’s Al Alam television.

“Iran has no military presence in the region, especially in Syria,” Mehmanparast added.

It was not immediately possible to clarify the apparent contradiction between Mehmanparast and Jafari’s position.

Jafari’s comments had been the first official acknowledgement that Iran had military personnel on the ground in Syria, where an 18-month-old uprising against the Iranian-backed Syrian government has left tens of thousands dead.

Mehmanparast’s denial hinted that Jafari’s comments had caused problems for Iran, which was asked by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman earlier in the day to assure that its Revolutionary Guards had no presence in his country now.

The Lebanese Hezbollah, a powerful Shi’ite Muslim militant and political group backed by Syria and Iran, was established with IRGC help after Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon.

Western countries and Syrian opposition groups have long suspected Iran has troops in Syria. Iran has denied this.

Qods is an IRGC unit set up to export Iran’s ideology. It has been accused of plotting attacks inside Iraq since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein by U.S.-led forces in 2003.

Shi’ite Iran voiced favor for Arab popular uprisings which removed autocratic leaders in Egypt, Libya and Yemen but has steadfastly supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a member of the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam.

Iranian leaders have accused the West of plotting with some Arab countries to overthrow the Syrian leadership and bolster the status of Tehran’s arch-foe Israel in the region. U.S.-aligned Gulf Arabs have supported the anti-Assad Syrian rebels.

Deny all you like..how many times we heard it publicly that they’re there in lebanon. Then one hour later they deny it. i have seen them in south lebanon in my own eyes..Hezbollah is a tool in the hands of Iran. they empowered them to do their dirty work. they fight israel and use terrorism. Hezbollah and Al Qaada are both employees of Iran plaine and simple. The Anti-Islam Movie was showing since July and no one cared. Until Iran kept pushing it everywhere and finally succeeded in enticing those donkeys to protest in the street. The movie was definitely wrong and it should not been out there. Protesting is anyone rights, but killing in the name of religions defeats the purpose of religion. that’s become a cult nothing else..

Yes Al Qaada works for the CIA that’s why they’re bombing all the US embassies. you’re too smart Moe.. you should been a scientist..Half of Al Qaada trains in Iran and indirectly works in conjunctions with hezbollah. have you seen Al Qaada protesting in front of Syrian and Iranian Embassies? I guess maybe the AMericans told not to..

        1.  Al CIAda is just a pretext to keep invading plundering and installing puppet dictators or overthrowing unfriendly governments they work and where created and funded by the USA Saud puppets.

        2.  Al CIAda bombs all the Iraqi’s and is USA funded to kill Shia and Christian Arabs in Iraq… In a few months alone over 500 killed by  Al CIAda.

        3.  Why would Iran train and fund Wahhabi’s that suicide bomb Shia Muslims? Listen to your self  dude.

      3. The Saudis, Qataris, Turks , Pakistanis – are responsible for supporting radical Sunni Jihadists for many years (Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya and now Syria). I admit I don’t understand the Americans and the British who fight the Taliban in Afghanistan but use the same kind of people in Syria and in Lybia.

The Israelis don’t like Assad / Hizbullah / Iran – yet they don’t want an extremist Sunni entity or Jihadists in Syria either. In the case of the Syrian civil war – Israeli policy is actually neutral.
