According to a report by ad-Diyar newspaper Speaker Nabih Berri has been avoiding public appearances because he is being targeted for assassination.
Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil, who is Berri’s advisor, told the daily that the speaker is refraining from appearing in public due to “compelling security reasons.”
Berri did not attend the annual Iftar banquet held by his AMAL Movement on Thursday nor did he attend the Iftar held by President Michel Suleiman at the Baabda Palace on Wednesday.
According to reports that surfaced earlier this month the al-Qaeda terrorist organization offered a $300,000 reward for the assassination of Berri and Army chief Gen. Jean Kahwaji.
Several politicians have recently been the targets of assassination attempts including MP Butros Harb and Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea
