Russia remains a ‘friend of the Arab world’ even though its veto on a United Nations Security Council resolution has been misunderstood by some Arab countries, Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said today.
“Someone is trying very hard to drive a wedge between Russia and the Arab world,” Churkin told reporters in New York, citing unidentified media reports that he threatened and was rude to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani in private meetings last week.
Churkin said he had a saying for “those in the Arab world that may be upset about our positions” on Syria: “don’t spit in a well, you may well need it for a drink of water.”
