Berri trying to dissuade Mikati from resigning over STL funding

Sources close to House Speaker Nabih Berri told al Sharq al Awsat newspaper in remarks published on Saturday , that “an atmosphere of openness prevailed during Friday’s meeting between Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the speaker and the discussions focused on the search for solutions and for an exit strategy that is suitable for everyone concerned.”

In response to a question on whether Berri is working on coming up with a solution for financing the UN backed court, the sources hinted that “the effort focused on softening Mikati’s position in order to dissuade him from resigning ”

The sources asked: “Wasn’t the International Tribunal the reason behind the overthrowing of the government of former PM Saad Hariri? Doesn’t Mikati know that the reason he is now the prime minister is because the former government was sacked over the court issue? This was the basis of the discussions and not solutions for financing the Special Tribunal of Lebanon ( STL) ”

أعلنت مصادر مقرّبة من رئيس مجلس النواب نبيه بري لصحيفة “الشرق الأوسط”، أن “اللقاء مع رئيس مجلس الوزراء نجيب ميقاتي ساده جو من الصراحة، والبحث عن الحلول والمخارج المناسبة للجميع”.

وردا على سؤال عمّا إذا كان بري يعمل على ابتداع مخرج لتمويل المحكمة، لمحت المصادر إلى أن “الجهد ينصب على تليين موقف رئيس الحكومة نجيب ميقاتي وثنيه عن الذهاب نحو الاستقالة”.

وسألت المصادر: “أليست المحكمة الدولية هي التي أطاحت بحكومة الرئيس سعد الحريري؟ ألم يكن الرئيس ميقاتي على علم بأن ملف المحكمة هو الذي طيّر الحكومة السابقة وجاء بحكومته؟ على هذه القاعدة يجري البحث وليس على قاعدة تأمين المخرج للتمويل”.
