Christians must not support brutal regimes, Geagea

Middle East Christians must be “leaders of the Arab liberation movement” not “defenders of backward and brutal regimes,” a Christian Lebanese leader critical of the Syrian regime said Saturday.

Samir Geagea’s comments come amid a heated debate that erupted in Lebanon over controversial remarks by the head of the nation’s Maronite Christians, who warned an end to Syria’s regime threatens Christians across the Middle East.

“My brothers in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt and throughout the region, do not be afraid … immerse yourselves in the suffering of the peoples of the region, always be leaders of the liberation movements and progress,” said Geagea, who has traditionally been a critic of Damascus.

He said the region’s minority Christians had become “sandbags defending brutal and backward regimes.”

Earlier this month, during his first visit to France, the head of Lebanon’s Maronite Christians Patriarch Beshara Butros Rai urged that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad –once the arch-enemy of Lebanon’s Maronites – be given a chance to implement reforms, saying the “poor man cannot work miracles.”

Many of Syria’s minority Christians, which include Maronites, are concerned that Islamic extremists could rise to power should the Syrian regime collapse.

Rai had echoed that fear, voicing concern of a takeover by the radical Muslim Brotherhood, a movement the Syrian authorities have blacklisted for decades.

Christians must not remain “spectators before the Arab spring … for us this is a matter of life or death,” Geagea shot back.

Lebanon’s Maronite Christians, once united against Syria’s 30-year sway over Lebanon, are now divided over the anti-regime uprising in Syria. The United Nations says more than 2,700 people have been killed in the Syrian regime’s crackdown on protests that began in mid-March.

Maronites allied with Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which is supported by Syria and Iran, are backing Assad and accusing radical Sunnis of stirring the unrest.

Other Lebanese Christians, allied with pro-Western former premier Saad Hariri, have voiced support for the anti-Assad protests.

Christian minorities in Syria, comprising 4.1 percent of the population, live in harmony with the Alawite minority in power, while the vast majority of the 18 million Syrians are Sunnis.

    Absolutely right.
In fact, anyone with any ‘moral’ sense cannot condone what is happening in Syria. More of the barbaric stories need to be printed, such as: (United Nations ‘Human Rights’ files)
The case of the 18-yr old woman – skinned alive … arms cut off … and then the head …
” Relatives found the mutilated body of Zainab al-Hosni by chance at a morgue in the city of Homs, Amnesty Int’l says.”
Imagine that – by chance – when they were summond to come to pick up her brother’s body Sept. 13th, 3 days (only) after his arrest.
At a morgue in a ‘military hosptial’ … no less.
Ms. Hosni was abducted by men suspected of belonging to the security forces in July, apparently to put pressure on her activist brother Mohammad Deeb al-Hosni to turn himself in, according to Amnesty.
Shades of the middle ages … I suspect they are sadistic enough to have made him watch what they did to his sister before they killed him.
“If it is confirmed that Zainab was in custody when she died, this would be one of the most disturbing cases of a death in detention we have seen so far,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa.

So yes, Mr. Geagea – speak up, and continue to speak up. It is the RIGHT thing to do.
We should all be doing it.

    1. Al Jazeera boadcast a group of people in Syria  who held a man down and cut his head off in front of children than placed it on the gound, while they where chanting,
      Allah Akbur.
I could not sleep for days, these children had a smile on their face while they watched.
This is the future of the middle east stuck in the 6th century.

You and I have trouble even writing about it … yet it is so outrageous that people need to know. Cudos to Geagea on this.

      2. indeed very disturbing, you wonder just what it wil take for someone to drop a sledge hammer  on these subhuman pigs, i mean what else has to happen? how brutal does it have to be for  one of the surrounding countries  to go mental on him? not 6 months down the road,,,TODAY
the majority of arab countries dont have the balls or the morals to stick their neck out for anyone.

For F**k’s sake we have such a backwards community where we only look after our own kin.
