Jumblatt angers Aoun and his bloc members over energy bill

The rejection of MP Michel Aoun’s energy draft bill in the parliament by MP Walid Jumblatt and his parliamentary bloc has angered the Change and reform bloc leader and his bloc members.

MP Nabil Nicolas blamed Jumblatt for the failure of passing the bill and said what kind of alliance is this if our ally does not support us.

Energy and Water Minister Jebran Bassil who is aoun’s son-in-law told As Safir newspaper: “We are either an actual majority that seeks providing people with their vital needs (or we’re not), but we will not accept becoming false witnesses, therefore we won’t agree on hitting the Lebanese peoples’ interests.”

Jumblatt, National Front Struggle parliamentary bloc leader said in remarks published on Thursday that his bloc’s position on the electricity draft bill during Wednesday’s parliament session “is technical,” and has nothing to do with taking sides.

On Wednesday the majority of the parliament objected to adopting Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun’s draft bill .

The electricity project is “a very sensitive issue” that must be thoroughly discussed in the cabinet because it addresses spending a large sum of money, Jumblatt told As-Safir newspaper.

The draft bill allows Bassil, to receive $1.2 billion to implement a project for producing 700 Megawatts of electricity.

“Parliament is facing a test of either lighting Lebanon or leaving it in the dark,” Aoun told As Safir newspaper, adding “there is no reason for any team to oppose it.”

Aoun called on the Lebanese to occupy parliament “if you want electricity and I will support you.”

What this means, is that politicians shouldn’t be discussing electricity.
Clearly it needs good engineers and planners who will work within a budget, over time, to assess the problems with geography, technical details, etc. in an economic manner. That team, providing their solution to a government – open to all the people as well in it’s basic format – will also have the essential costs figured out. At that point they can discuss where to get the money.
Have we seen the plan? Do we know what sources they contemplate? Are we going to pollute more or try for a little ‘green’?
People want to see the plan … not the money arguments of simple politicians.

700 Megawats is only about half of what is needed NOW.
What does ‘implement’ a plan really mean? And why would it cost 1.2 BILLION just to ‘implement a project’? Are they paying engineers that much to draw up plans? And then after, how much will the whole project cost?
Too many questions from the public who sit in the dark waiting …

    1. Once they figure out who pockets how much they should all agree and dont expect your questions to be answered. In Brasil they produce power from garbage. google it and see. we have lots of garbage in lebanon and the gases garbage produces can produce the power lebanon needs or at least some of it. We should look into hydro dams and garbage fills to power lebanon. Its safer, cheaper and a better long term solution. Jamblat owns a oil refinery so its not in his interest to have more power in lebanon because people would stop buying diesel to power generators.

Plowing it into the olive groves along with the plastic and tin cans is not the answer for garbage, for sure.

  18. Poor Mr. Aoun!!!! Jumblatt did not give you a blank check… Please let me know whre I can send you some diapers you cry baby!!!!
How do you want to spend this much money on a plan that does not exist!!! How about trying to stop people why illegally steal electric power first? How about show the Lebanese people and explain to them what you are planning on doing with the money? How about having frsh unbias engineers come up with a good study on how we can produce environmentally friendly electricity? How about and about and about….
If your solution is for people to ocuupy the parliament until you get what you want, when you want it, and how you want it!!!! then your plan is not worth the time to even vote on it, never mind spending a dime on…
Please Mr. Aoun, either grow up!!!!!!!!!! or shut up…

I guess Aoun is a short sighted man. It seems he is BLIND and DEAF. He does not hear and see what is Happening  near our boarders to the TYRANT of SYRIA . The TYRANT who terrorised  and still terrorising the Lebanese People for forty years. Aoun Believed that The Syrian Tyrant will make him President and Believes That Jund Allah will take him with them to HEAVENS. Mabrouk Mr. Aoun. But Unfortunately you will be going soon to hell. This is the wish of the lebanese people who have DIGNITY and who believe in REEDOM and DEMOCRACY
