U.S. urges Lebanon to act on Hariri indictments

The United States on Thursday welcomed a U.N.-backed tribunal’s indictments in the 2005 assassination of Lebanese statesman Rafik al-Hariri and urged Lebanon’s government to act on them.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the indictments and four arrest warrants marked “an important step toward justice and ending impunity for political assassinations in Lebanon.”

Prosecutor Saeed Mirza has not disclosed the contents of the indictments, but they are expected to accuse four Hezbollah members of involvement in the Beirut bombing that killed al-Hariri and 22 others.

The United States has repeatedly said the findings of the tribunal must be respected and has been wary of a new Lebanese government dominated by Hezbollah, which the United States has labeled a terrorist group.

Toner said the United States had not seen the sealed indictments and could not comment on their substance. But he urged the new Lebanese government of Nijab Mikati to act.

“It’s important that the indictments now handed over to the special prosecutor now be acted upon. Obviously we want to see this chapter in Lebanon’s history closed, and that closure involves taking the next steps,” Toner said.

“The sealed indictments have been handed over. We’re now going to look to see what the Lebanese government does next. We’re looking for it to take action,” he said.

There have been fears in Lebanon that indictments of Hezbollah members over the assassination of the prominent Sunni Muslim leader, who was prime minister for several terms between 1992 and 2004, could raise sectarian tensions between factions still struggling with the legacy of its 1975-90 civil war.

HA’s hands are dirty.  Are the people of Lebanon going to excuse HA for this murder of historical proportions because HA’s claim over Israeli aggression?  Or you may ask yourself did Israel invaded Lebanon or attacked Lebanon in 2006 because HA acted aggressively towards Israel to fulfill Iran’s agenda?  Or may be HA truly defended itself and Lebanon while supporting the Palestinian cause without considering Iran’s agenda.  If that is the case, then long live HA. OK, if we follow this reasoning then you must ask yourself “could HA have achieved this without Iran’s support?  If so, what does Iran want in return?  So, we are back to the same conclusion.  HA owes “something” to Iran.  ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE IN TO IRANIAN DEMANDS AND SACRIFICE LEBANON AND THE REGION? I DON’T.

Whatever Israel’s excuse/agenda/reason was to invade Lebanon in the past, the present or the future, I, WE, AND THE PEOPLE OF LEBANON MUST STAND STRONG UNITED AGAINST SUCH AGGRESSION.  IT IS TIME FOR HA TO INCORPORATE ITS ARMY WITH THE LEGITIMATE ARMY OF LEBANON, AND NOT FURTHER THE INTERESTS OF IRAN IN THE REGION.  (UNLESS OF COURSE HA DOES NOT CONSIDER ITSELF AS TRUE LEBANESE AND DOES NOT EMBRACE ITS CULTURE).

Iran’s interest is to achieve dominance in the Middle East NO MATTER WHAT COST TO LEBANON.  They can do so by defeating Israel once and for all which will be a de facto victory against the U.S., and Lebanon would be a open season to the Iranians.

LEBANON CAN NO LONGER CARRY THE HEAVY BURDEN OF THE PALESTINIAN REFUGEES ON HER LAND.  If this means that Israel should be defeated and cornered to accept this UNITED RESOLUTION, THAN EVERYBODY/PARTY IN LEBANON, AND THE WHOLE ARAB WORLD, SHOULD TAKE THIS STAND.  BUT YOU SHOULD ALSO ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES.  IS THE MIDDLE EAST BETTER OFF WITHOUT US INTERESTS IN THE REGION?  IF YES, ARE YOU BETTER OFF WITH IRANIAN AND OTHER RELIGIOUS EXTREMIST WAY OF LIFE FOR OUR PROSPERITY AND WELL BEING?  You make the choice.  I rather not have anybody tell me what to do, but, if I am not the loudest barking dog, I must and will make the correct choice.

It is time for the Lebanese people to think about Lebanon’s economy and prosperity.  Work towards finding ways to ease the enormous debt that Lebanon is in.  Start thinking about evaluating the Lebanese currency, trade and tourism so we can compete and put a strong front against the Europeans and the Chinese.  WE NEED TO BE LEBANESE AGAIN.  SHOULD WE CARE WHETHER WE ARE ARMENIANS, MARONITE OR ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS, SUNNI OR SHIITE MUSLIMS OR DURZIE? OTHERS MAY CARE TO MAKE US WEAK.  AREN’T WE ALL LEBANESE?

Just a thought which comes from good intentions.

Right – … well, not all are Lebanese … Syria imported a lot of Syrians when they were ‘guarding against Israelis’ … but maybe even those people would like to have jobs and some peace too. So, right – the people must stop fighting between themselves and continue the ‘Green evolution’ with only one army for defence of Lebanon, and an elected government which does it’s jobs FOR the country. And nobody wants Syrian or Iranian ‘control’ …. no freedom in that for sure.

        Thank your for your reply.

I urge more readers to support our views.  Come on people, don’t be complacent and pull the bull from the horn and demand your government to support this righteous conviction.  We need more people like you to to voice their demands and take action,
