Syria withdraws from UN rights council vote for a seat

Syria on Wednesday officially withdrew from a vote for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council, under mounting international pressure over its deadly crackdown on opposition protesters, diplomats said.

Western diplomats say Kuwait will replace Syria as the candidate for the seat .

During a meeting of the UN representatives of the Asian countries Syria reportedly officially withdrew and Kuwait took its place .

Western and European countries intensified their efforts recently to prevent Syria from seeking the seat according to diplomats

Kuwait agreed “privately” to contest the May 20 secret-ballot vote at the UN General Assembly as a candidate for one of the four seats on the Geneva-based Human Rights Council, one western diplomat reported on Tuesday.
