Bkirki sources have revealed that the election of a new Patriarch in Lebanon is imminent and will not take much longer .

In an interview with MTV the Bkirki sources pointed out that the elections were transparent and the competition is now between 4 and Bishops. Due to the secrecy of the elections the names of the 4 bishops were not revealed .

The 39 Maronite bishops have been meeting since Saturday in Bkirki to elect a successor to Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir . The winner should secure minimum two thirds of the votes ( 26 votes).

Sfeir, 90 had asked several months ago to be relieved of his post because of his age. Sfeir’s resignation was accepted last month during a meeting with the pope on the sidelines of a visit to the Vatican to unveil a statue of the Maronite Church founder Saint Maroun on the outer wall of Saint Peter’s Basilica.
