MP Fadi Karam, a key member of the Lebanese Forces responded Saturday to Hezbollah official Sheikh Naim Qassem by , saying the Christians don’t need your protection and Jounieh residents have always been able to defend themselves.
“Just like all the previous invaders could not reach Jounieh, not ISIS nor anyone else could do so now. But the important thing is for Qassem’s thinking not to infiltrate Jounieh through his Christian allies,” Karam said in a statement in a possible reference to Hezbollah’s Christian ally MP Michel Aoun.
Qassem who is the deputy of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ( ISIS) would have erected checkpoints in Jounieh, Beirut and Sidon as well as every other region in Lebanon if the his group had not intervened in Syria.
“Thank God we went to fight in Syria at the right time, and we were in the place we should be to prevent this grave danger,” Qassem said Friday evening stressing that the threat would not have been restricting to the Bekaa Valley if the party had remained idle.
Hezbollah has been trying to woo the sympathy of the Lebanese Christians by using scare tactics, taking advantage of ISIS criminality .
But the party that gambled on making ISIS the “Trojan horse” failed to lure Christians into the game of illegal weapons , according to analysts
Other Christian leaders chastised Qassem
March 14 coalition’s secretary-general, Fares Soueid responded to Qassem by saying: “Hezbollah insists on insulting Christians in a very clear way when it pretends as if the party now has a new job.”
“Hezbollah wants to pretend as if it is now transformed into a Christian army in Lebanon to protect [Christians] from ISIS threats,” Soueid told Al-Joumhouria in remarks published Saturday.
“Protecting people is the reasonability of the Lebanese state and if the state is incapable, Christians never neglected [such a task] and do not need Hezbollah to protect them.”
“Christians have always taught people about the resistance and will continue to do so.” Soueid said
Elie Mahfouz, a member of the March 14 alliance and head of the Change Movement slammed Qassem and told him :
“O Sheikh Naim Qassem not ISIS nor your party and before them the Palestinian militants were able to invade Jounieh , just ask your ally Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun , who is the one that described Kesserwan as the capital of the Maronites . Sheikh Qasim you obviously don’t know the Maronites and Aoun is not one of them.”
He added: “Shame on you for paying the Shiite youth to defend a criminal like ( Syrian president) Bashar al-Assad against the Syrian people “.
He continued : “Sheikh Qassem, Lebanon paid the highest price, as a result of Hezbollah’s abnormal behavior .”
