Palestinian Jund al-Sham leader Abu Youssef Sharqieh passed away in the Palestinian Ain al-Hilweh camp after a struggle with illness, according to a report by NOW in Sidon .
Sharqieh, whose family hailed from the Palestinian town of Amqa, has been living in the troubled Ain el-Hilweh camp in Sidon for several years.
He moved to the refugee camp after the 2007 Lebanese army campaign against Fatah al-Islam in the Palestinian Nahr al-Bared refugee camp, outside Tripoli.
About Jund al-Sham
Palestinian Jund al-Sham ( soldiers of Damascus) is a Salafi-influenced Sunni Muslim Palestinian group in the Ain el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near the southern port city of Sidon, Lebanon . Its presence has also been reported in other parts of Lebanon and in Syria as well on various occasions. It is an anti-Fatah organization formed in 2004 and is considered a splinter group of Osbat al-Nour.
The Palestinian Jund al-Sham are allegedly providing protection and refuge to the Lebanese former artist Fadl Shaker in al-Tawarii neighborhood inside Ain el-Hilweh camp after he fled there following clashes between Salafist cleric Ahmed al-Assir and the Lebanese Army .
