Lebanon’s Al Sad to represent Asia in IHF Super Globe

Al Sad, Lebanon’s champion and finalist in the latest edition of the Asian Champions handball League, will represent Asia in the IHF Super Globe in Qatar in May according to the International Handball Federation (IHF).

Qatar will host the fourth edition of the IHF’s Super Globe Championship from May 17th to 21st. The tournament brings together the continental handball champions of five continents – Europe, Asia, the Americas, Oceania and Africa, plus the Qatari champions Al Sadd.

The Qatari team and Al Sad, Beiruts southern suburbs’ handball club, are joined by Spanish league and European Champions league winners BM Ciudad Real, Pan American winners Unopar Fel Sercomtel from Brazil, and Oceania representative AHF Southern Stars from Australia. The African representative will be known following a qualification process in the coming weeks.

“We are expecting a highly competitive and exciting tournament with such high quality teams already confirmed for Doha. We are sure that fans from

across the region and round the world will witness wonderful games and excitement until the last moment in this fantastic competition, to be played in Qatar’s unparalleled sporting facilities,” said Mr. Saadoun al-Kuwari, Event Director, IHF Super Globe Organising Committee.

Qatar successfully hosted the 2005 IHF Junior Championships and has already once hosted the IFH Super Globe in 2002, the year in which local club Al Sadd became Super Globe Champions on home soil.

Mr. al-Kuwari added: “Qatar is well known for hosting a number of successful sporting events on a regular basis ranging from youth competitions to major international fixtures.

“We will offer an extraordinary handball event in Qatar for players and spectators alike and look forward to be the host of this clash of continents.”

The teams were drawn into groups in the logo launch and draw ceremony in Doha recently. In Group A, BM Ciudad Real will meet Unopar Fel / Sercomtel and the African team which will qualify later. Al Sadd Club will meet AHF Southern Stars and Al Sad in Group B.

The IHF Super Globe was previously played in a five-year cycle in 1997 (Austria) 2002 (Qatar) and 2007 (Egypt). Under the new deal, the Super Globe will be organised annually in Qatar’s state-of-the art facilities from 2010 to 2013. Gulf News
