One person was killed on Saturday by an explosive device he was handling in the northern Lebanese port city of Tripoli and six others were wounded, a security source told AFP.
The dead man, an Islamist, died when the home-made bomb detonated prematurely, the source said adding that two other people were wounded in the blast in the west Tripoli district of Baqar.
Following the incident, gun battles erupted between Baqar, a Sunni Muslim neighborhood, and Jabal Mohsen, an Alawite district, wounding four Sunni Muslim residents.
Violence has regularly broken out in Tripoli, a majority Sunni city, between Sunni residents and the minority Alawites — an offshoot of Shiite Islam — of Jabal Mohsen.
The clashes have become more frequent and deadly since the beginning of the Syrian uprising. Over 100,000 have been killed in Syria since the uprising erupted in March 2011
