Car bomb explodes in Syrian capital despite truce

Syria’s state-run media say a car bomb has exploded in Damascus, causing a number of casualties.

The blast on the southern edge of the city comes despite a holiday truce that went into effect Friday morning.

The cease-fire proposed by the U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, has been marred by scattered violence and fighting in several towns and cities across the country.

State-owned SANA news agency says the car bomb in the Daff el-Shouq area of Damascus caused significant material damage and a number of casualties.

It did not give specific figures or say what the target was. Car bombs targeting Syrian security forces in the capital have become common in Syria amid the raging civil war.
