The Arab League demanded on Sunday that Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad step down and form a national unity government with opposition forces, marking an uptick in the League’s increasingly muscular efforts to resolve the 10-month bloody uprising.

The pan-Arab body asked that Mr. Assad yield power to his vice president after the formation of the unity government within two months. The League also requested that the United Nations Security Council endorse the League’s new strategy for resolving the abiding violence in Syria.

According to an article published by Ya Libnan on December 22, Russia also proposed to Syrian Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa ( during a December secret visit to Moscow) to assume the powers of President Assad for a transitional period and until elections are being held. This in exchange for Assad being granted a political asylum in Moscow.
