Lebanon will attend a “Friends of Libya” meeting in Paris this week to discuss the African country’s future without strongman Moamer Kadhafi, a government official said Wednesday.
“Lebanon was invited to attend the conference in Paris on the future of Libya and will be represented by Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Foreign Minister Adnan Mansur,” the official told AFP, requesting anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the press.
Beirut has recognised the Libyan rebel-led National Transitional Council and in September will temporarily preside over the United Nations Security Council.
It has also for years demanded Kadhafi uncover the fate of Imam Musa Sadr, an Iranian-born Lebanese cleric revered by Lebanon’s Shiite Muslims.
Sadr mysteriously vanished on August 31, 1978 while on a trip to Libya.
Around 60 nations are expected to be represented at Thursday’s Friends of Libya conference in Paris, which will be co-chaired by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron.
The conference is expected to discuss funding for the war-shattered country as well as police training and diplomatic recognition for its future administration.
