Thirty members of Syria’s ruling Baath party in the city of Banias announced their resignation in protest against the deadly crackdown on protesters, in a statement received by AFP on Wednesday.
In a related development Al-Arabiya reported that Daraa residents are complaining of water and food shortages.
Syrian troops have again fired on residents of the southern flashpoint town of Daraa as a military assault on the pro-democracy protest hub continued into a second day.
“The bullets continue against the people, but we are resisting,” activist Abazid Abdullah said by telephone from the town near the Jordanian border.
At least 25 people were killed in Daraa on Monday in intensive shelling after thousands of Syrian troops backed by tanks and snipers, activists and witnesses swarmed into the town.
On the same day, Syrian troops also launched assaults on the Damascus suburbs of Douma and Al-Maadamiyeh, witnesses said.
