Former Libyan Foreign Minister Musa Kusa, who defected to Britain, wants to help rebels but isn’t welcome among their ranks, The Daily Telegraph said Saturday.
Kusa defected last week and told officials he wanted to help rebels overthrow Libya’s military leader, Moammar Gadhafi, but rebels rejected his offer, the newspaper said.
Mahmoud Shammam, a spokesman for the Interim Transitional National Council, told the newspaper Kusa’s past as a minister made him undesirable.
“I don’t think the council is ready to deal with him,” Shammam said. “Kusa comes with heavy baggage on human-rights issues. He was involved in many crimes in Libya as director of intelligence.”
The BBC said British intelligence officials suspect Kusa had intelligence involvement in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Kusa reportedly has been in a series of debriefings by Britain’s MI6 foreign intelligence agency since he arrived in London, the Telegraph said.
