Outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri told the New York Times in an interview on Wednesday at his residence in down town Beirut that whoever killed his father doesn’t want him to be in power.
“Whoever killed Rafik Hariri in 2005 doesn’t want Saad Hariri to be in power.” Hariri said.
“What’s happening today is that they are trying to achieve what they wanted to achieve in 2005,” Hariri added in reference to so called coup to bring down his government
Hariri was also asked if his father would have made the same choices in these political developments.
Hariri responded by saying : “It’s a very difficult question to answer. I went very far with what I wanted to achieve for this country, in this deal, and unfortunately I wasn’t met halfway.”In reference to the Saudi-Syrian failed efforts to end the Lebanese crisis.
PM designate Najib Mikati did confirm yesterday that he was nominated to protect Hezbollah. He told AFP on Tuesday : “My nomination by Hezbollah does not make me committed to any political stance other than protecting the Resistance.” This was a possible reference to Hezbollah’s five point plan.
In response to a question about his willingness to sever in the new government that will be formed by Mikati , Hariri said: “I have to sit down with my allies and consult with them before I decide ” Hariri told New York Times.
The Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah and its March 8 allies brought down Hariri’s government on January 12 over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon ( STL) indictment which is widely expected to implicate Hezbollah members in the assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri in 2005 .
According to analysts the issue in Lebanon is not who is Mikati as much as how did Mikati get nominated and by whom
