Amal movement ministers insisted on discussing false witnesses issue

The Lebanese cabinet held a meeting today at the Baabda Presidential Palace. Prior to the session President Michel Suleiman and PM Saad Hariri held a closed door meeting.

The cabinet had 58 items on its agenda and planned to resume the discussion on the draft 2011 state budget, according to local reports.

Amal ministers threatened to walk out of the Wednesday evening cabinet session unless the issue of false witnesses is brought up.

President Michel Suleiman promised the Amal ministers to address the issue at the end of the meeting, according to local reports.

The cabinet’s agenda was scheduled to end around 7 p.m., after which the ministers planned to address the issue of false witnesses, according to local reports

The cabinet delegated Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar on August 18 to follow up on the issue of witnesses who gave false testimonies in the investigation of the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

March 8 coalition ministers will bring up the issue of false witnesses during the Wednesday evening cabinet session, Health Minister Mohammad Jawad Khalifeh, a member of the Amal movement told reporters before entering the ministerial meeting.

Khalifeh added that the issue of false witnesses has become more important than before.
