Lebanese Attorney General Judge Said Mirza demanded to summon former General Security Department chief Brig. Gen. Jamil Sayyed for threatening state security and Premier Saad Hariri, An Nahar daily reported Thursday.
The newspaper said that Mirza issued the summons overnight tasking the Criminal Investigation Bureau to summon Sayyed “for threatening state security, slamming the constitution, threatening Prime Minister Saad Hariri and attacking him and verbally attacking the judiciary and state .
Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar had asked Mirza to take legal action against Sayyed after reviewing with him a tape of the former security chief’s press conference last Sunday, according to An Nahar.
Sayyed along with 3 other generals was detained from 2005 to 2009 on suspicion of involvement in former PM Rafik Hariri’s murder. In April 2009, the STL ordered their release without charges due to insufficient evidence. STL prosecutor made it clear at the time they were set free that their release did not mean they are Innocent and that once more evidence is available they could be back in jail.
Sayyed, a staunch ally of Syria was criticized following a press conference on Sunday in which he said that “[Saad Hariri] should take a lie detector test to prove he did not support or fund false witnesses in the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).” He also said that the prime minister should “admit that he sold his father’s blood for four years in order to implement a new Middle East project,” a reference to US policy in the region.
Sayyed even threatened to take justice into his own hands if Hariri did not act to put false witnesses on trial.
“I vow upon my honor that if you (Hariri) do not give me my right, I will take it with my own hands some day,” Sayyed vowed.
MP Okab Sakr commented on Sayyed’s statements by saying:
“Sayyed has lost some of his memory and his psychological state is getting worse,” adding that the Sayyed’s state of mind has deteriorated since he lost power as head of General Security.
“If there was a State in Lebanon, Sayyed would have been put in jail a long time ago and before Hariri’s 2005 assassination” Sakr said
Sakr added: “Sayyed built his palace on the skulls of many Lebanese who were humiliated, robbed of their money and probably killed.”
