Beirut, Lebanon- Ambassadors of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in Beirut met Lebanon’s Prime Minister-designate Saad Al Hariri on Monday to discuss developments in Lebanon, following election of its president and the steps being taken to form the new government there, UAE News Agency (WAM) reported .
Hariri was quoted by Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) as lauding the vital role the GCC played in Lebanon’s economy, be it in export, investment or tourism. He highlighted the funds offered by the GCC for developmental programmes and rebuilding in Lebanon.
“All Lebanese know this truth and are proud and grateful that their Gulf brothers stand by them,” noted Al Hariri, adding that the Lebanese counted on the continuity of these amicable relations.
Al Hariri was certain that the “summer clouds” that tainted relations with the GCC were gone forever.
UAE Ambassador Hamad Saeed Sultan Al Shamsi praised the steps taken by Al Hariri and expressed the hope that the Lebanese government would be formed soon to contribute to Lebanon’s progress in all fields, WAM reported.
Kuwaiti Ambassador to Lebanon, Abdul Aal al-Qinai, asserted that GCC States unanimously stand by Lebanon in all matters that would lead to the country’s prosperity and stability.
Hariri told the Ambassadors that the election of Michel Aoun for president and the soon formation of a Cabinet create a real opportunity to reconfirm Lebanon’s Arab identity and boost relations with the Arab brethren in the GCC.
“The Lebanese welcome the inaugural speech of President Aoun, including the part concerning Lebanon’s relations with Arab countries, based on respect of the charter of the Arab League, especially article eight that states that member countries should not interfere in each other’s affairs.” Hariri added.
