Karma Mohammad Tahseen Khayat of the Lebanon-based Al-Jadeed TV s is shown during trial by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. She is accused of jeopardizing the case against the alleged killers of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri by trying to expose witnesses.

A Lebanese reporter and her TV station  went on trial on Thursday accused of jeopardizing the case against the alleged killers of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri by trying to expose witnesses.

A prosecutor at the U.N.-backed court in The Hague said broadcasts in 2012 by journalist Karma Khayat and the Lebanon-based Al-Jadeed TV station had risked ruining the investigation into the 2005 assassination of Hariri.

“If witnesses are too frightened to come to this tribunal, then this tribunal is finished,” said prosecutor Kenneth Scott.

Khayat and Al-Jadeed deny wrongdoing, saying the accusations were a bid to silence the media. Addressing the court, Khayat said her reports had been aimed at exposing leaks emanating from the Special Tribunal for Lebanon — an international body that has consumed hundreds of millions of dollars in public money.

“$500 million has been paid by us for this seven-star courtroom in The Hague. It is our right to make sure these finances are being spent properly,” Khayat said.

Hariri and 21 others were killed in a waterfront bomb blast that upset a fragile peace in the eastern Mediterranean country, dragging it back to the brink of civil war.

The tribunal was set up after Lebanese politicians said their judicial system could not cope with the investigation.

Five suspects, all linked to the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah, have since been indicted for the killing. They remain at large and are being tried in their absence.

Scott said that Khayat’s interviews of alleged witnesses was “part of a campaign to undermine the tribunal”.

He said dozens of witnesses were easily identifiable from their voices, home and work addresses, and car license plates.

“What this case is really about is a media company and its management that wanted a big scoop, a high-profile, sensational, so-called exclusive, and they were willing to do whatever it took to get it,” he said.

Khayat says nobody was identifiable in her broadcasts and her lawyer said it was not the fault of the media if it exposed flaws that affected public confidence in the tribunal.

“That’s the job of the free press,” said Karim Khan. “Sometimes the emperor has no clothes.”

The tribunal told Reuters that an investigator had looked into allegations that leaks had come from within its ranks and had concluded that was “unlikely”.

Khayat, who is part owner of the station whose chairman is  her father Tahseen  Khayat could face up to seven years in prison and, along with and Al-Jadeed, a fine of up to 130,000 euros ($138,600) if convicted.

“$500 million has been paid by us for this seven-star courtroom in The Hague”……..
One can see the ‘mind-set’ with that ‘seven-star’ line. And oh, dear, in the Hague. How degrading to need to go to the most open and honest court anyone can dream of, which also uses the laws of the countries it tries cases FOR.
Where they as adamant about trying to get it TO a trial IN a Lebanese Courtroom? Did they ‘report’ all the evidence they had against the accused? OR the ones they wanted to accuse? Did they FIND and interview the killers?? Someone actually did it. They can’t deny that. We can note that the accused here is not inside a monkey-cage dressed in sweaty rags, at least, and can probably go for a coffee at ‘resess’, and a walk with her lawyer.

Obviously she had a political as well as financial motive behind revealing the names of the witnesses.
Political because her father is well known as the sworn enemy of Rafik Hariri and is closely associated with Hezbollah and the Syrian regime .
Financial because she is part owner of the company which benefited financially from its exclusive report on disclosure of the identity of the witnesses.
“a fine of up to 130,000 euros ($138,600) if convicted ” is peanuts for her father Tahseen who is a billionaire

So what if her father is a billionaire? Do they owe you any money?
For once a person says the truth and you bury her.
Listen to her discourse… She rocks. She should be elected to be the president because she has more balls than any politician we ever had bar none.

You obviously don’t get it which surprises me because you seem to be a very smart man !!
She has an agenda that calls for undermining the court .
Exposing the witnesses spells the end of the court
“If witnesses are too frightened to come to this tribunal, then this tribunal is finished,”

Since her father is the sworn enemy of Hariri , they ( she and her dad) are both trying hard to help Hezbollah and Syria
In other words she is not there because she is worried about paying the fine , she is at the court to undermine it and render it useless.

Smart or not I am confused and Lebanese politics do confuse me… They switch sides so often that I often find myself dizzy reaching for Dramamine… 😉
That being said… They have been shut down for years by the syrian stooges in Lebanon because they were against the Syrian hegemony over Lebanon… Are you saying they switched side?
That being said I do not need to spend that much money so the court and after MANY years come back with no results… They are milking Lebanon to tell me something I already know. It is Assad who killed Hariri NO MATTER who executed it be it HA or the SSNP.
You do not need Einstein to tell you that… Any Lebanese even from the Da7ye 😉 knows that but they would blame Israel for it because it is convenient.
I do agree with her discourse… The last I checked Lebanon was a democracy… YEAH right! 😉

Welcome to the club… we are all confused .
I agree that Assad wanted Hariri killed and Hezbollah executed the murder .
But the court has to prove this !!
Karma Khayat did not help in disclosing the identity of the Witnesses . All she did was help the killers Hezbollah and Assad and not justice

That is the point I was trying to make .
