MP Akram Chehayeb, a key member of the Progressive Socialist party which is headed by MP Walid Jumblatt said on Thursday that it’s about time for the Lebanese government to expel the Syrian ambassador to Lebanon.
“It’s about time for our government to rise against deliberate and repeated humiliation and expel the one who has turned the embassy into a den of hatred and conspiracy,” Chehayeb said in a statement issued by his media office.
The MP hailed the courageous step taken by the Greek government in expelling the Syrian envoy
This development comes after reports revealed that the Syrian forces loyal to president Bashar al-Assad fired Scud missiles at rebel forces,and used incendiary devices similar to napalm weapons against the civilan population.
The current Lebanese government is dominated by the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah militant group which is supporting Assad regime in his crackdown against the Syrian uprising. Over 42,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in mid March 2011.
Greece expels Syrian envoy
Greece expelled Syria’s ambassador to Athens and two other Syrian diplomats, the Greek foreign ministry said on Wednesday
The foreign ministry said it had summoned the ambassador on Tuesday to ask her and and two other Syrian diplomats to leave Greece effective immediately . The embassy in Athens will offer only limited consular services. Greece shut down its own embassy in Damascus on July 26.
The ministry said that Greece “looks forward soon to the full reopening of the Greek Embassy in Damascus when conditions in that country allow the full development of bilateral relations.”
