5 Syrians arrested for explosives possession: army

Lebanese soldiers raided an apartment in the country’s south on Saturday and arrested five Syrian nationals for possession of explosives, the army said, the latest incident fanning fears that Syria’s civil war is spilling across the border.

The arrests came on the eve of Ashoura, the annual Shiite commemoration of the 7th-century death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson. Shiite processions — one of which will take place in Nabatiyeh where the arrests occurred — have been attacked by Sunni extremists in Iraq and other countries.

Lebanese media reports said the suspects planned to use the explosives to attack Shiite mourners marking Ashoura Sunday. An army spokesman declined comment to The Associated Press, pending judicial investigations.

Lebanon and Syria share a complex web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries which are easily enflamed. Lebanon, a country plagued by decades of strife, has been on edge since the uprising in Syria against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011, with deadly clashes between pro and anti- Assad Lebanese groups erupting on several occasions.

Many among Lebanon’s Sunni Muslims have backed Syria’s mainly Sunni rebels, in which radical Islamists have become increasingly active. Lebanese Shiite Muslims and the militant group Hezbollah have tended to back Assad, whose tiny Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

In this latest incident, an army statement said the five Syrians were arrested in the southern market town of Nabatiyeh following a tip that they were involved in “suspicious security activity.” Army personnel seized 450 grams (one pound) of explosives, a detonator, and ammunition for a 160 mm mortar with Hebrew writing on it, the statement said.

Last month, Lebanon plunged into several days of violence after the country’s intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan was assassinated in a Beirut car bomb.

Al-Hassan was a powerful opponent of Syria’s influence in Lebanon and many here blamed his killing on Syria.

    Well we must applaud the army for saving so many people in advance from possible explosions and they have been proved for the intents to do it. Then these criminals should be executed so no one else will attempt it again. Having said that I wish the Army arrest the culprits who were behind the assasinations of Wissam Al Hassan. Oh wait can’t do that because the information Ministry controlled by Aoun which is controlled by Hezbollah will not allow these information to be given to the investigators so we save Israel ass from being the culprit.. i see how it is now. Israel kills M14 leaders and many great men like Al Hassan and hezbollah accuses it of it. But they also hide the communication information so we keep investigation half-ass done. Its amazing the army intelligence are so quick in beating up on someone critical of them because they blocked the road for hours while people are toasting in their cars while the army unexpectedly shut down the road. they free up the hezbollah killer of Samir hana the army pilot shot by hezbollah. Then since Colonel Hana was spying for israel, hezbollah members celeberated his killer freedom. oh yah Pilot Hana was an israeli pilot and he was trespassing on Lebanese territory. so much for the equation of resistance Army and whatever else they want to confuse us with..

        How do you know that the free Syrian Army would bomb the church? Will it benefit the Sunnis or the Hezbushaitan. Do you remember Al Shahama bomb plot ? Your dirty game wont work that long as you see how Bashar Al-Qaeda is having his butt kicked where Hezbushaitan and Iranian Majoosis also getting the beating. Its coming towards Lebanon too. 

        The Syrian Mujaheddin have a good amount of Arms now and they wont hesitate to share it with Aasir.The most necessary mission is to disarm hezbushaitan in order to stop the violence. The Lebanese government couldnt disarm this fake resistance group but inshallah the Syrian Mujaheddin will be able to strip you off.

        The Zionist supply arms to Iran. There are plenty of evidence already. Why do you connect everything with Israel? Posing as the enemy of Israel doesnt make you look good when you kill the sunnis in Syria ,Iraq ,Lebanon etc. Everything you do to help Israel and for your personal gain.

          The News and the Lebanese army said they had Made in Israel bombs and weapons, Can you not read? Prior to Iran’s revolution the dictator puppet king was friendly to Israel like your Wahhabi Saud king is now. Post revolution all of that stopped.

        Yes and its already done by the syrian army over there too and they in turn accused the FSA of it. Well they bombed Lebanon churches and mosques too. so where is the difference here? what are you trying to prove? didn’t the syrian regime attack the Mosque in Daraa and other cities in Syria? you keep trying to bring this fear among the christians too. Before you guys accused mubarack of it then after him you didn’t say anything.. what does it make you.. a true hypocrite..

    The army has yet to put a statement regarding the arrest of these men.All these rumors about a planned attack on  Ashura  celebrations are nothing but speculations.These speculations are designed to inflame the shiia-sunni tensions. Although they might have criminal intentions, but these rumors are very dangerous because their effect could be as bad as an actual attack .

    Hmm … so it appears we do have the capability to monitor, find and capture people with explosives. But I guess that capability correlates with the targets, not the assailants.

    Hello…..Look at the type of weapon Israel supply to Iran. Where do they get the confidence selling spare parts of fighter bomber to Iran violating the US arms embargo on Iran? Standing up against the oppression is a must and inshallah you will see how the sunnis beat the crap out of hezbushaitan. Just look at the nature of resistance of the Afghan Mujaheddin, Iraqi Mujaheddin and the Syrian Mujaheddin they can go on for years without a pause against a enemy with sophisticated weapon. Would you dare to face 70+ countries with all the modern weapon? You would pee in your pant. 

    Look at the latest lousy war between the Israel Khamas , first khamas fired rockets and they themselves do not know the target , they just aim towards Israel and I believe Israel told khamas where to aim , possibly on a potato field. In return Israel fired and killed civilians and during this phony war the political murder happened and we will find that out soon. . And all of the sudden cease fire cease fire , end of a 3 days war and khamas is claiming victory. Why you do 3 day 4 day 6 day war? You have all kind of weapon including drone.You do great war by mouth though but when it come to killing sunni civilian you seems very active. Iran has been sending weapon ,army etc to help the Syrian regime but we do not see this action against Israel.
