Tunisia has extradited a senior leader of the deposed Gaddafi government back to Libya. Al Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi served as prime minister under the late Libyan leader.
Mahmoudi is the first senior official to be sent back for trial under the jurisdiction of the country’s transitional leadership. He served as prime minister from 2006 until he fled to neighbouring Tunisia last August as the Gaddafi government collapsed.
His extradition could establish a precedent for other countries who have given refuge to or arrested members of Gaddafi’s old entourage.
