Lebanon stops man attempting to smuggle ancient coins to Germany

The National News Agency (NNA) reported on Friday that the security forces at Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport thwarted an attempt to smuggle artifacts comprised of around 850 ancient metal coins to Germany.

The report said the perpetrator was a Lebanese-German national identified as J.Y who was travelling to Frankfurt.

    ooooh – That’s what we lebanese are good for. But to catch and stop people or groups smuggeling weapons, that’s out of the question. What I want to know, what is so bad about taking coins to Germany? Did he steal them? Are rare coins illegal to sell, WTF Ya Libnan? put some facts or data behind the story

       That’s probably all they had.  Anyway, last time I was in Baalbek, I bought some ‘ancient’ coins … at least they looked like old coins.  How smart are the customs guys, anyway??

        I did the same in Byblos once … I think they found the old coin moulds or stamps … been a good business for decades in tourist areas … ‘Psst…. wanna buy some ancient Roman or Sumerian coins?’ (Freshly minted …)
