Patriarch Rai will not meet with US officials during his US tour

Lebanon’s Christian Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai will not meet with US officials during his tour of the US which begins on Saturday, MTV reported on Wednesday.

MTV added that Rai is going to conduct a pastoral tour across the US starting October the beginning of October

Former Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir always stopped in Washington DC to meet US key officials whenever he visited the US , but Rai’s recent stance may be the reason behind his decision not to meet US officials according to local analysts

Rai came under fire earlier this month from the opposition March 14 parties but won praise from March 8 politicians for indirectly defending Hezbollah’s arms and linking the party’s arsenal to the termination of Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory and the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland . Even MP Walid Jumblatt who defected from March 14 alliance was very critical of Rai’s statements.

Rai emphasized during a trip to Paris that “only when the international community exerts pressure on Israel to vacate the occupied Lebanese territory ( the Shebaa Farms, Kfar Shouba hills and the Lebanese part of the disputed border village of Ghajar ) and Israel allows Palestinians in Lebanon to return to their homes, can Hezbollah be asked to hand over its arms because they will no longer be needed.”

Rai added that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is “open-minded” and should be given more chances to implement the reforms he already announced.

The patriarch claimed after returning to Lebanon that the remarks he made while in Paris “were taken out of context and have nothing to do” with his personal opinion.

Assad’s regime has cracked down on a string of unprecedented protests across his country, killing more than 2,700 civilian protesters since the uprising began in March, according to the United Nations.

Maybe he will meet some Christians … they can explain religion’s place in US society.

Shankarees, Before you accuse him of lying, please look at the facts behind his decision.  His visit to the US is very short and for religious reasons.  We as Lebanese Maronites/Christians deserve the attention of our church leader as much as Bekerky.  He will have barely time to visit the few churches.  It will be best if he dedicates his visit to the churches not to Washington DC – as a religious figure.
I personally believe that the Patriarch should not interfere with politics.  He should not meet with US political officials and should not make any political statements.
What he said Paris is derived from fear for the Christian safety.  I don’t think he is a fan of Assad or Hezbollah.  He just wants to protect the Christians.  We are betrayed and tortured all over the world – even in the US.  The Atheists are taking over our kids.
Look at the Christians of Iraq and the handful of Christians left in Jerusalem, the Christians in Eygpt – our girls are getting rapped, our youth are getting killed, and our homes are being robbed.
Lebanon is the only hope for Eastern churches.  Please keep religion out of all politics nonsense.

he was planning to visit washington DC but it was refused after his illthought comments in Paris….also, his visit was downgraded to a mere religious tour..

i agree with you he as a religious figure should stayed out of politics but he didn’t and obviously he does not agree with you, in every visit he is reiterating political views of the sunni monster out to get the christians.. ba3den it is too late he visited  some political figures in France and so cannot rewind events back.

again, this fear of the christian safety from sunnis has no basis whatsoever especially IN LEBANON and facts/reality confirms this.
he would not have said Assad is a good man and that we should give him more chance if he was not a fan…other wise he is being hypocrite and that is not a befiting to a person in his position..

the christians in the east are not all catholic and maronites so he should not be expressing somethings on their behalf anyway.

the christians in Iraq were more in number and supported the sunni leader before the american invation backed by Irani murshed that resulted in christian migration…the govt in iraq now is heavily supported by Iran,,a shiite muslim NOT sunni extremist.

the christians in Egypt are in a different basket, because they had trouble with their fellow citizens before the Arab spring…ba3den they have been in egypt for a long time and they are still there, no one exterminated them and no one will…because the egyptians are sunnis.

the christians in Lebanon…well they weren’t the only one who suffered, migrated, whose homes and families destroyed…but you should know more then anyone because you are lebanese [i assume] who was behind the suffering and the destruction of all lebanese poeple and their country…it is certainly not the sunni extremist…

to believe the propaganda that Assad keeps pumping into some brains if anything goes against the morals of the church that you are supposed to follow.

I agree with the last three paragraphs of your post but, trust me, the U.S. administration refused to meet him while every time Patriarch Sfair came here, he was welcomed at the White House.  The administration is displeased with what he had to say and, just to save face, it is being portrayed as his mission is purely religious.  Neither you nor anybody else can persuade me that his communique about Assad and Hezbollah are good for me, as a Lebanese Christian nor is it conducive to Christian – Sunni & Druze relations.  He repeated himself in the Spiritual Summit and thought no one would hear but we all know that there was no misinterpretation of his Paris statements but repetition of the same.  It does not matter to me if he is a patriarch because I will criticize the Pope, if he were to say anything wrong.

Christians of the East are in deep trouble and being soft on radicals like Shiite Hezbollah or Sunni Salafites and their planned Islamic state in Lebanon and dictators like Assad will not help.

The proof that what Rai said is wrong is the fact that Hezbollah and the Aounies are supporting him.  This is the biggest proof that shows the errors of his ways.  I am deeply disappointed in him and anyone who supports his feeble stand.

nagy_michael2,You are an heretic i.e. Protestant and have no right to write about Christianity.  Only Apostolic Churches are in the right while you Protestants ignore that we decided what the Bible is (compiled the Canon).  Further, you ignore the teachings of the Church Fathers who came immediately after the Apostles.  Because of your stupid interpretation of the Bible, there are more heretic Protestant sects and cults than there are Protestants. You are right only when it comes to Michel Aoun.

      4. i have no desire to argue for the sport of it but from a scripture point of view you are 100% correct,
there is repeated and very strong language throughout the bible indicating the use of images of any kind being a no no

A Clear Bible TeachingGod’s Law forbade making images as objects of worship. The second of the Ten Commandments decreed: “You shall not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.” (Exodus 20:4, 5) The inspired Christian Scriptures also command: “You must keep clear of idolatry.”—1 Corinthians 10:14.
True, many insist that their use of images in worship is not idolatry. Orthodox Christians, for example, often deny that they actually worship the icons before which they bow, kneel, and pray. An Orthodox priest wrote: “We pay respect to them because they are holy objects, and because we reverence what the Icons depict.”
Still, the question remains: Does God approve the use of icons for the purpose of even so-called indirect veneration? Nowhere does the Bible authorize such a practice. When the Israelites set up an image of a calf, allegedly for the purpose of venerating God, he expressed his strong disapproval, saying that they had apostatized.—
God now said to Moses: “Go, descend, because your people whom you led up out of the land of Egypt have acted ruinously Exodus 32:7

What, though, about the veneration of individuals, such as Mary or “saints”? Jesus, responding to a temptation from Satan, referred to Deuteronomy 6:13 and said: “You must worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone.” (Matthew 4:10) He later said that true worshipers would worship “the Father,” no one else. (John 4:23) Realizing this, an angel reprimanded the apostle John for attempting to worship him, saying:  “Be careful! Do not do that! All I am is a fellow slave of you and of your brothers who are prophets and of those who are observing the words of this scroll. Worship God.” Revelation 22:9.
Is it proper to pray to Jesus’ earthly mother, Mary, or to particular “saints,” asking them to intercede with God in one’s behalf? The Bible’s direct answer is: “There is only one mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus.”—1 Timothy 2:5.
Safeguard Your Relationship With God Your Relationship With God The use of icons in worship, being against the clear teaching of the Bible, cannot help people to win God’s approval and gain salvation. On the contrary, Jesus said that everlasting life depends upon our taking in knowledge of the only true God, becoming acquainted with his matchless personality as well as with his purposes and dealings with humans. (John 17:3) Icons that do not see, feel, or speak do not help one to know God and to worship him acceptably. (Psalm 115:4-8) That most important education is available only through a study of God’s Word, the Bible.
Besides affording no benefit, icon worship may be spiritually dangerous. How so? First and foremost, it can cause a breach in one’s relationship with God. Regarding Israel, who “angered him with abominable idols,” God foretold: “I will hide my face from them.” (Deuteronomy 32:16, 20, The New American Bible) Rebuilding their relationship with God meant their ‘spurning sinful idols.’—Isaiah 31:6, 7, NAB.
How appropriate, therefore, the Scriptural counsel: “My little children, be on your guard against idols”!—1 John 5:21, NAB.

Besides, Henry 8th had enough problems with a Pope … and even the Irish are trying to keep it quiet these days. 😉
The struggle to get these silly translations of a book OUT of national politics is bad enough without dumping on the coffee & sandwiches …

have you even read the Bible? “matthew 7 1-5″( I am not putting the words here cause you need to do some work if I am to educate you), you think you are acting christian like by sitting in judgement of other christians? show me where the Bible ever condoned such behavior, otherwise I tell you what Jesus told all in matthew 10:14.
I didnt judge you, that’s why I asked you a few questions, but you didnt answer, is it cause you have no answers?

nagy_michael2, it is not nice to bad mouth the priests and the nuns, and to call people whores.  Before we accuse anyone of a sin, we should look deep in our hearts and clean our own selves first.  If women dress improperly for the masses, God should be the only one to judge them.  Instead of looking at them with lusty eyes, pray for them – God will hear your prayers if they are coming from the heart with clear conscious.

Mother Mary is holy because she held Jesus in her womb.  St. Charbel, St. Maron. St. Ne3mat Allah, St. Rafqa and all the other Saints were blessed by Jesus and given the power to perform miracles – something that you and I do not have.  Please read all the documented miracles done by Saints before you belittle them. No true Christians will say things to offend other fellow Christians.
Antar2011, A Religious visit is not a downgrade from a political one; it is actually the other way around.

And to answer your question, I am a Lebanese Catholic (Malkite) who left her land at a very early age, and hope to return one day.  Even though I was blessed not to witness the war, but my parents and grandparents always educated us about what is going on in or homeland.

Most all religions had a swing at poor Christians, Jews, Muslims (Sunnis and Shiites), Druze, and in some case Christians against Christians.  Now days, even Buddhists and Atheists are fighting Christians.

I personally not a fan of any of the present Lebanese political figures – they all have bloody hands.

I am one of these poor Lebanese common people tortured by all political parties.  Hezbollah took our land, my God-brother was kidnapped by the Syrian army and we have not heard back from him for more than 20 years.  My cousin was killed in Al-Safra by another Christian, and my grandmother always reminds us of the 16 members of our extended family who were slained by Druze bil Jabal.  JaaJaa killed innocent army majors and innocents in Saydit Al Najat, Aoun betrayed the Christians, and the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, we have no clean leaders that I know off.  Even Mr. Al Rafique Al Harriri, I heard stories that no man can be proud of.

Sadly, I have no hope that my kids will ever see their ancestors land, and thanks to all those in power.  My only hope is to raise them to be good Lebanese/Americans Christians and to hold Christ in their heart and mind and to represent their country to the best of their abilities.

So please, kindly leave the religion and religious figure out of the dirty politics, and lets all pray for a clean healthy Lebanon where we can all live in peace, Christians, Muslims, and Druze.

JoAnna I am sorry about what happened to your family but Charbel was not blessed by Jesus because we have centuries difference when the two were born. As far as spiritual blessings that’s your beliefs and again no mention of these so called saints in the bible please. I saw so many corruptions in the church it made me ashamed to go there. I am not here to attack you personally and I was merely point out that Rhai spoke politics and many in M8 supporters supported his views and talked about his rights to speak. But when Sfeir spoke he was told to shut the hell up. I don’t support these muslims extremists either. I am sure they’re lots of good people from all religion. But to me I have not since hypocricy as much as I saw from the Orthodox and catholics. I am sure the jews who are extremists are no different to me thatn Qaedaa. Sorry but God said to worship the father, son and holy ghost. All else are false believers..Its not Rhai business to tell the French and everyone else that Hezbollah is entitled to keep their weapons as long we have occupied land. First the farms belongs to Syria and the latter has not signed over these freakin farms. Besides Syria hurt christians more than any muslims and also they occupy lebanon still in many areas. So why don’t ask Rhai to stop talking politics then and spread the word of God not whether i am comfortable with a dictator in Syria who is killing his own people so he can stay in power.

      1. Listen dude, you are saying exactly what you are criticizing Rai for. Believe it or not he has you in mind when he says Christians, so you are included. Whoever Rai had in mind will not distinguish between Catholics or Protestants.
You can dislike the behaviors of some of us but that does not mean all church attendees are the same. You might be little jealous that no girls at that church checked you out or were responsive to your attitude. 4. joanna, greetings to you and thanks for sharing very personal and painfull experience . no doubt something is seriously wrong with the whole picture simply based on the results that you and others would point to.

the fruitage of the christian spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, good faith, mildness and self control galatians 5,23. this should be the guide line  and style in how we view and treat others.

just like the old days leaders are impure in their thinking and often only represent one group and leave the other in the cold. the example below points to jesus view and compassion was towards ALL people not 1 specific group.

Jesus set out on a tour of all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news of the kingdom and curing every sort of disease and every sort of infirmity. 36 On seeing the crowds he felt pity for them, because they were skinned and thrown about like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples: “Yes, the harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:35-38
on getting out, he saw a great crowd, but he was moved with pity for them, because they were as sheep without a shepherd. And he started to teach them many things. Mark 6:34

i realize that this subject and the use of scriptures is sometimes not fashionable and frowned on but i offer no appology for using it as it should be the only authority in defining what a christian view should be and is not as bad as calling a fellow christian a donkey.
