Arab League Secretary-General Nabil el-Arabi said yesterday that he and Syrian President Bashar al- Assad have agreed on a series of measures to apply political reforms in Syria, Al Arabiya television reported.
The measures will be presented to an Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo, el-Arabi said during a brief news conference at Cairo airport after returning from a meeting in Damascus. He offered no specifics about their discussion. The foreign ministers’ meeting is scheduled for Sept. 13.
A report of the meeting by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said only that the two men “agreed on practical steps for speeding up the reform process.” SANA said el-Arabi affirmed “that the Arab League and Arab countries are committed to Syria’s security and stability.”
Al Arabiya, citing activists, also reported that government forces killed 27 people across Syria yesterday. At least 12 died in the city of Homs, the network said. SANA reported that gunmen attacked a military bus near Homs yesterday, killing the driver and injuring several passengers.
