Turkey Expels Israel’s Ambassador, Cuts Military Ties

Share:

Turkey has expelled Israel’s ambassador to Ankara. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced Ankara’s expulsion of the Israeli ambassador, along with a suspension of all military agreements with Israel, in a short statement to the media.

He said Turkey is reducing its relations with Israel to the level of second secretary, and expects the ambassador to leave by Wednesday.

The expulsion comes after details were leaked of a U.N. report into the killing last year by Israeli forces of nine Turks who were taking part in a flotilla of ships seeking to break Israel’s economic blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Ankara gave Friday, the day the U.N. report is to be officially released, as the deadline for an apology from Jerusalem and for the payment of compensation to the families of those killed. Davutoglu blamed divisions in the Israeli government for its failure to meet Turkey’s demands.

Turkey met four times with the Israelis, he said, and on two occasions reached an agreement to which the Israeli prime minister agreed, but not the Israeli Cabinet.

The Turkish foreign minister said his government will now provide full support to the families of those killed to pursue prosecution of any Israeli military or government members responsible for the deaths.

The U.N. report said excessive force was used by Israel. It also said some of those killed were shot in the back and at close quarters. But the report also defended Israel’s right to enforce its economic embargo on Gaza. That finding is strongly condemned by the Turkish government. President Abdullah Gul strongly condemned the report.

Such a report does not exist for Turkey,he said. He went on to issue a warning, saying Turkey, as the most powerful country in the region, will not only protect its own rights but also those of all the people in need. He said the international community should be aware of this.

Mr. Gul’s warning came after Foreign Minister Davutoglu said Turkey would take measures to ensure free maritime movement in the eastern Mediterranean. Davutoglu refused to explain how exactly Turkey will do this.

Diplomatic columnist Semih Idiz says such ambiguity will cause concern.

“It does suggest that the Turkish navy will be patrolling the area and obviously against Israeli ships,” says Idiz. “Some groups may decide to force the blockade, relying on Turkish intervention.”

The Turkish Islamic charity, the Humanitarian Relief Foundation, could be key to determining what direction Turkish-Israeli relations take.

Last year’s killings took place during the seizure by Israeli forces of the group’s ship, the Mavi Marmara. Huseyin Oruc, deputy head of the foundation, welcomed Ankara’s tough stance. He said the group has no current plans to send ships to Gaza, but did not rule it out in the future.

“What Israel says in [the] eastern Mediterranean, ‘I can stop anyone. I can kill whoever out of my beliefs. I can do whatever I like.’ But now another country says that is not acceptable. ‘If you do something, I will prevent them.’ It’s very, very important. If we feel that the Gazan people are in need, we can go of course. Still we have a boat,” says Oruc.

The foundation withdrew the Mavi Marmara at the last minute from this year’s attempt to break Israel’s Gaza blockade.

That withdrawal is widely believed to have come about because of pressure from the Turkish government. There had been hopes and rumors that Jerusalem would meet Turkey’s demands, under reported intense pressure from the United States. Now there seems little hope of that, according to diplomatic columnist Idiz.

“Well, the implications are that they are more or less finished. I mean, the sides have just drawn their red lines and they [are] not prepared to concede in any way. This could have been resolved a long time ago, but clearly there is no will on either [side] to do so.”

Observers say with the crisis in Syria continuing to deepen, another crisis could now be looming between two of Syria’s neighbors, Israel and Turkey, the region’s most powerful countries.

my gripe is that israel is becoming like arafat in the sense that they never miss an opportunity to miss another opportunity! and it appears that turkey gave them a way out  with a simple token of saying sorry we messed up.
israel insists on coming  out of this smelling like roses ,and turkey insists on not coming out of this as a weak !~^k

      1. Mr Geo Metro FYI :It was turkey’s responsibility to stop the Illegal  flotiilla from sailing out of Turkey. The Turks knew very well what the outcome was going to be???. I wil suggest to you that Israel send a flotilla full of Armenians and Kurdistanies desidents  to stambul. And you will see the same reaction from the Turks !!!… Also,Israel have the rigth to protect its borders {including maritime]..What is wrong with that????.Furthermore, let’s return Texas,California,New Mexico and arizona to mexico just to prove your point???.Wars change topography and borders, that is just the nature of wars. The Hebrews have been in the Land for 3500 years, much before Islam was invented..Turkey is just another Muslim nation trying to position themselves globally..But we all know the barbaric history of Ottomam Empire, and all the land they grabed by massacring Armenians and Kurdistanies..If anybody came out smeling like roses was hypo-critical Turkey..

further i will confess  if  i am guilty of any bias it would be my past  pro israeli attitude born  as a result of my hatred of palestinians for what they did to my counrty and and my childhood .

today although i despise their military side i dont hate palestinians but have compassion for their suffering as a people.

when i see an israeli pregnant lady killed by hamas i see her as my own sister, my point is i hate violence  and the lack of respect for the innocent.
i consider the israeli and palestinan leadership as a shamefull  fail as far as results go and like many other spectators am tired of seeing blood spilled.   i have not read the full report but cant help think that there was another way to handle the matter without creating another link to add to the chain of killings and another blemish to the whole picture.

  3. months of efforts  to avoid the the meltdown between the two countries.
yet  israel is too hard headed and arrogant to print  a statement on a piece of paper acknowleging wrong doing in this matter.
what do you have to lose? what are you so scared of? what does it really cost? 9 people lost their lives totally uneccessarly and you are above reproach, pathetic.

    1. Israel has nothing to apologize for, as stated in the Palmer Report. Why should Israel be blamed for the relations meltdown? Turkey should be blamed for demanding such a ridiculous thing. I am an Israeli leftist and have no problem criticizing my government when they do something wrong, but in this case, they didn’t, and I strongly support their decision not to apologize for defending our border and our lives. We are not a slave of Turkey. Israel is no longer an Ottoman province. We are an independent nation and shouldn’t have to apologize for it.

      1. you have every right to defend your borders and your citizens , but what about  the nine people not with their families this beautiful september 2? did they  absolutly have  to be shot? they  were no more dangerous than the rest of the people on the boat perhaps you should have killed them too!
its in  your scriptures, blood is sacred.

        1. If you put your hand in a bee hive, don’t be surprised if you get stung. Those armed flotilla activists aboard the Mavi Marmara, like those aboard the other boats in the flotilla, could have easily submitted to Israeli seizure of their vessel and distribution of their aid through proper channels after being inspected. Instead, they chose to attack the soldiers with knives, pipes, etc.

I can’t imagine what they thought would happen. Israelis would sit around and allow themselves to get beaten to death? Not anymore! The diaspora is over. No more inquisitions, no more holocausts, no more pogroms. If we are threatened or attacked, we respond, just like any other country in the world would.

The real shame is on Erdogan for corrupting this affair into such a major episode just for petty politics. I don’t know if there’s a hell or not, but if there is one, he’ll rot in it.

Like Erdogan   or hate him, you have to recognize and admire his political talents. He is the master of politics. The timing  of  the expulsion of  Israel’s  ambassador  could not have been  a  result  of  the UN report  which  blamed  Israel  for excessive  use of  force, nor could it  be a  result  of   Israeli Knesset  rejection of Netanyahu’s willingness  to  issue  an  official apology, but rather  a  sign of increased confidence  in  turkey’s  leadership, and  its ambitions.
It is  all about timing; With  Mubarak  ousted and jailed, Bin Ali is  on his  death  bed, Ghaddafi on  the run, Assad  fighting for  survival, Iran  ducking, and the  gulf  states  busy  doing  nothing,,  Erdogan shrewdly  calculated  that such an   action , as  expulsion of  Israel  ambassador, can   only   enhance  the  stature of turkey and  its  prime minister in the  Muslim  world, and makes it  eligible of  a stronger  regional  leadership .while  Arab  leaders are  being  removed  one after the other,  all Muslims  would look  up  for  Erdogan, and  turkey  as  the modern  Muslim  leader  who  takes  action  to  protect  Ghaza and  the  Palestinians.Arabs and muslims are  always  looking  for  a hero. Prophet, Turkey is using Israel as a whippin boy in order to advance its agenda in the arab world. Erdogan has done nothing to the Syrian protesters. He keeps threatening Damascus and Bashar keeps sticking it to him. The report shows that the protesters had guns and were attacking the Israelis. I am pretty sure that Israel recognizes the importance to keep Turkey on its side. But Israel do not want to go as far as even appologizing in public, that tells you that they stands by their action and conviction. Where was Turkey all those years when Lebanon and Palestinians populations being bombarded by Israelis? where was Turkey in 2006? Turkey need to stop the fake act and even with Syrian protesters they could careless about them. They’re only afraid not to flood their borders with syrian refugees and also no civil war spills over to their border.
If Turkey cares about muslims and arabs, why don’t they give the Kurds a homeland and let them live in peace? why Turkey up to date have not apploigized or admitted about the Genocide of the Armenians people? Any Turks speaks against the gov’t genocide, they get jailed and punished. so much for Erdogan hypocracy..

      1.  israel clearly fell into the trap of erdogans own cunning and manuver.
they could have asserted all the standard discalimers of israels sovreignty  and right to defend its border and make the star of the show  SINCERE APOLOGIES AND   REGRET TO  LOSS OF  9 LIVES.

no one disputes  the atrosities commited by the turks but the sad part to that whole region is its allways  a tid for a tad and lawyering to fight to be right and human life is not even secondary but it is on the bottom of the list  of importance.

everytime you bring the issue of loss human life to the table somehow the subject is changed immediatley.

Before I sign off and wish you and everyone else a wonderful long weekend, I want to tell this old joke in order to illustrate my views of the middle east and its relationship with God.
This is at a time when Clinton, Yeltsin, and Netanyahu were in power in 90, and before the death of the late pop; Pope John Paul II. It goes like this:
During the pope’s visit to Washington, and while visiting the white house, The pope noticed a red phone at the president’s desk. His curiosity took hold of him, and He inquired about the red phone . Clinton explained to him that this is the phone he uses to communicate with God. The pope happy and anxious, asked if He could use the phone and communicate with God. Clinton replied; Sure but it will cost you $500.
No problem, the pope said. He used the phone, and communicated with God ,and left the white house very happy.
On a visit to Moscow, The pope noticed a similar red phone at Yeltsin’s office. After inquiring , He was told that it is the magic red phone that Yeltsin uses to talk to God, and it costs $ 50 to use . The pope happily accepted, and used the phone and communicated with god, and left Moscow very happy.
A year later, on a visit to Jerusalem, and while paying a visit to Netanyahu, He noticed a red phone on his desk. Same story, it is a phone the prime minister uses to communicate with God, and it costs $5 to use. The pope’s surprise was very visible, and He said to the prime mister; In Washington Clinton charged me $500 to use the phone, In Moscow Yeltsin charged me $ 50 , and You are only asking for $ 5 to use it; Was I ripped off by Clinton and Yeltsin?
No, Netanyahu replied, In Washington and Moscow it is long distance, You are in Jerusalem and it is just a local call here.

No, Natanyau replied, In Washington and Moscow it is long distance, You are in Jerusalem and it is just a local call here.

This proves what a failure Turkey’s policy of “no problem” with anyone turned out to be and davotuglu hitting rock bottom in leading Turkey’s diplomacy. I think this guy ought to resign, his failure on scorring diplomatic points on so many levels has weakened Turkey and its international role. Not only Israelis are laughing at him now but his dear friend Bashar gave him a finger in his face in Damascus. Not to mention the disappointment of many countries in Turkey’s flipflopping in Libya, on Iran’s nuclear activities…
What did Turkey do? What can it do? Nothing!!! minor player! festo’ fadeh!
Go back at trying to join the Eurozone, develop your economy and stay away from international politics where your efforts are clearly odorless farts.

I really didn’t want relations with Turkey anyway.

  21. I don’t think anyone understands Turkish politics. Tell me why did the government put 500 of the top generals in prison over the last 3 months yes 500 of them, now the country is run by this Erdogen and old men who want to take it back 100 years.
They think they are still in 1875, yes they are very powerful but if they don,t use thier heads they will be very sorry.

master, at the time Erdogen was  jailing  those  generals, Arab generals were  shooting  their  own  people. He  is  sending a  message that  military  people  should not  be  allowed  to  rule. His message is that  only a  democratically  elected  government  should  rule and  be  accountable. the man  is  looking  for a leadership role  way  beyond  the border of  his  country.Giving  up his  friend  Bashar, throwing  Israeli  ambassador  out, defending  Palestinians in Gazza, and  attacking  his  own  Kurdish community  without any  fear  of  criticism , are  all signs  of high confidence and big  ambitions. All Arab leaders are  watching  his  moves  nervously.

      1. Yes Prophet Ambition is high on the list, but you see my friend in the turkish Government is saying that this guy is taking the country back many years, to bring religion back into Politics.
This is not from a newspaper but the majority of the Turkish people are speaking of this every day, because they can see it happening.

it is sad to see a religious revival all over the world, master.just watch the governor of Texas who has a good chance of becoming a president of the US.Yes, Erdogane is using religion, but with western necktie. When Europe rejected them, they turned east, and toward Mecca.

I agree Prophet T … the religious ‘rightists’ on both sides feed off each other’s excesses. Radicals in all things are dangerous – especially when they become ‘leaders’ , whether by ballot-box or gun.
And in virtually all cases, it’s the under-educated masses easily led by false theorists (or educated/charismatic despots) who follow blindly because they wish to believe their ‘problems’ were caused by someone or something ‘out there’ – that ‘uncontrollable unseen’ they don’t understand. What they should be doing is figuring out why they understand so little first.
While the internet has opened up a world to people, it has not helped their understanding of it. No matter what language you speak, if you don’t know it well enough to read a book and understand what an author says in it, it was probably best not to begin trying.
And this is what ‘we’ have created – an interaction between people based on one-line or one-word small idiocies – which few of us recognize the idiocy of – as those who actually read books or do full research on this ‘net’ – in the attempt to understand how things relate to humans – become the least in the societies.
Action – reaction … Twits doing Tweets … is not the way to have any understanding of the human problems on the planet. Attempting to relate all the problems to ‘God’ – in any form – only plays on passions, not logic, and creates more problems for us all.
