US, Turkish leaders agree on ‘transition to democrac’ in Syria

Share:

US President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed during a phone call Thursday on the need for a “transition to democracy” in Syria, the White House said.

The White House also said that Obama and Erdogan had also agreed on the need for an “immediate halt of all bloodshed and violence against the Syrian people” by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

“The two leaders underscored the urgency of the situation, reiterated their deep concern about the Syrian government’s use of violence against civilians and their belief that the Syrian people’s legitimate demands for a transition to democracy should be met,” the White House said in a readout of the call.

While Obama and Erdogan in recent weeks have both deplored the regime’s violent crackdown against protesters, they have stopped short of calling directly for Assad’s departure.

During weeks of hesitation, Washington gradually hardened its stance, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saying Assad has lost his legitimacy to rule and the Obama administration pressing for tougher international sanctions on a regime bent on crushing a pro-democracy movement.

On Thursday, US officials said the United States has finally decided to call explicitly for Assad to step down amid broadening pressure to staunch the bloodshed, adding that the announcement could be just hours away.

Erdogan on Saturday said Turkey, which shares a border with Syria and whose ties with Damascus have flourished in recent years, “has run out of patience” with the ongoing violence.

Washington, citing rights activists in Syria, says more than 2,000 people have been killed in the Syrian unrest.

    assad is isolated  pretty much by now , he feels the heat , the only help he can still  get is from iran but ,iran only willing to backhim up with money and weapons supply to a point and will not risk an allout war against there country by interfeering militalrly
    in another word   if turkey gets  which is a nato memebr and a close ally of the us ,attack assad regeme  with an order from nato, iran will ot dare enter the war with turkey, turkey is on the top 8 most pwerfull military in the world , and they will defeat assad in a few days ; assad will be left alone and isolated and surrendered by all middleeastern countries against him, egypt, saudi,s kwait jordan, all mideast countries with sunni,s governement , so assad only option to survive and maybe his last one if make a deal with the un and us and do it now , take actions ,not only talks because his talking time is out;
    he needs to do what the un and the us wants  immediatley :

    1 – disarm hezbollah in lebanon ,even if he has to send in his tanks to south lebanon to do it;
    2- sign a peace agreement with lebanon and israel ,to guaratee stability in the area
    versus this he will get the sanctions lifted against him and help stay in power and reform to democracy  by giving longer time to reform

    The transition that they are referring to does no work that easily.
    Ibrahim Mar3ashly once used a good quote in Al Istath wal Mo3alimma for this type of transition, but I could not remember it!!

      you are right because the syrian pple want to see the end of him…

      at the same time there is no organised opposition that can take over the country..

      what do you suggest bro?

        To be honest with you there are no suggestions at all.
        Unfortunately they will have to go through it the hard way like every other arab country that was run by a dictator.
        The problem with syria though, the opposition is not united, and I do not mean united in a sense that they have to love each other. The opposition in syria is very similar to the four generals of Alexander the Great, each general has its own agenda and its own interests. The scary thing for syria is, which does not concern me, the opposition could break it up and destroy it. The same way the generals destroyed the Greek Empire.
        Also the same way the Lebanese have created states within states and destroyed Lebanon.

          don’t be afraid with the help of the criminals who put Syria on fire it will end up in a great Syria (the same as it was in the ottoman’s empire) in a tight union with Irak and Iran allowing the rightous and the trustworhty to lead the near orient

          but the protesters seemed genuine for unity…perhaps the opposition will come from these pple…yet how? i dunno…

          LEO your post below stresses your narrow minded thinking…is it believable to you that the salafist/extremist in syria is able to mobilise all these pple around syria for a plan to take over the country?

          come on man, it just nonsensical…there must be a genuine need for the everyday syrian pple to change the political situation in their country to the extent that they are willing to put their life’s at risk in oreder to have freedom..

          the start of the protesting wasn’t calling for Bashaar to step down..[i actually was disappointed with them because as a lebanese i know the syrian butcher’s merciless killings’s way] but they only started to want to see his end when he replied with brutality, killings and torturing of innosent pple…yes innosent pple who have nothing to do with the proptesters but happen to be the relative of this and that….

          he has made a lot of mistakes since the protests began and truely mate, no one believes his story of salafist/extremist propaganda….the countries who say that they believe him are liers they are just interested in their interests…

        Freedom is knowing that she can either wear it or not – as SHE chooses.
          There is no religious rule on that, except in certain despotic regimes who think women are only baby-factories to produce ‘warriors’, and lower than dirt.

      You really have some issues guy!!
      And you definitely must be a ssnp member, as most of your comments include greater syria.
      Forget greater syria mate, it only existed for a brief moment in history and it will never work in modern day society.
      The palestinians being the smallest numbers in the region cannot unit, let alone the Lebanese, the syrians, the Iraqis, the Cypriots, The Jordanians. Its like putting lions, buffalo, hyenas, cheetahs and wilderbeast in the same den and expecting that they will get along together.
      Truthfully, I do not have time for ssnp logic as I have grown up in that environment and have argued with them since i got involved in politics, its like talking to a brick wall. The syrian desert spans wide and long for miles, I suggest to everyone who believes in these theories to go and live there and start the empire from the desert if it succeeds. From most parts of Lebanon, it only takes 6-7 hours driving to the eastern desert in syria, its not that long. All you have to do is pack your bags and hand over the Lebanese ID to your nearest council, apply for a syrian visa from the syrian embassy in Beirut (if you are ssnp, you wont need one as the whole region is one country), fill your car up with fuel and your set. One way ticket to heaven. The heart of your empire. It will be close to Iraq, iran, easy access to weapons and a large landscape for training and setting up missiles. That way they can fight like real men instead of fighting from behind women and children.
      Don’t get me wrong, if you want to be part of greater syria, go ahead, but a great number of Lebanese do not want to have a bar of it and do not want it forced upon us either, the same way you do not like some Lebanese forcing upon you to have peace with israel!

      I conclude my conversation with you leo as I can see this is going to be a waste of time.
