Iran-Syria Aid Could Be In The Billions, report

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei backs offering $5.8 billion in aid to Syria to bolster its economy, a French newspaper said Friday, citing a report by a Tehran think-tank linked to Iran’s leadership.

Damascus has long been Tehran’s main ally among otherwise mainly hostile Arab states. After four months of popular unrest, Syria’s economy is reeling under the weight of strikes, reduced oil exports, scaled-back trade and international sanctions.

Its troubles have prompted Iran’s leadership to consider offering $5.8 billion in financial help, including a three-month loan worth $1.5 billion to be made available immediately, French business daily Les Echos said.

It added that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has backed the idea of the aid, which was outlined in a secret report by the Center for Strategic Research, a think tank linked to the Iranian leadership.

It was not possible to verify the report Friday.

Iran, Les Echos said, could also provide 290,000 barrels of oil to Syria each day over the next month while helping to boost border controls to stop Syrians from fleeing the country for Lebanon with cash.

    Wow … Tehran actually has a ‘think-tank’?
Guess we’d hate to see what it would be like if it didn’t … but do they understand the meaning of the words?

    1. It’s a top secret think tank of supreme intelligent beings lol… They all just hang out in a room, thinking sh*t up… The other day they already surpassed the Internet suitcase, submarine supremacy AND stealth tech..When the 1st wave goes over head they are going to drop a load n run

Iran spends a lot of energy to sustain the regime. Like for example to organize periodically a fake call for their opposition to take the street where they will be waiting for them to lock them up. Something Syria has picked up from them.

Just the internet censorship takes a substantial effort.

  5. All the more reason for Assad to fall. Trying to pay support so this madman can go on killing and suppressing.. Iran doesn’t want to loose its client or it’s transit hub to Hamas and Hezbollah. Iran has a big surprise coming soon and I think Syria’s dentist’s fall will play a big part in the over all freedom of the middle east..

the regeme will steal all the money like usual, the syrian people will not see a dime , they will be mader and mader and the protest will double and triple in size ; so this is not going  to work and change course in syria.

5 billion dollars would do nothing. Its too little for a country the size of Syria. On the other hand Lebanon could fix its energy problems and build a decent army with that kind of money. Since most Lebanese hate Iran a cash injection could help both sides. If the Iranians and HA want to make sure they count on Syria after the regime falls they should make contact and establish relationships with the opposition. Picking sides like they did will eliminate any chance of decent relations after the regime falls. If the regime survives they would still be able to count on Syria since Syria is isolated and needs Iran more than Iran needs Syria.

The Syrian opposition ‘sucking up’ to Iran would be as if Cleopatra ‘sucked up’ to the viper that bit her!  Decent relations, hah.  There can be no ‘decent relations’ with Iranian ‘fuzzy faces’. (Mr. ‘N’ included)
