Syria, Turkey to build a dam on Assi river

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Aleppo on Sunday in the presence of Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Syrian Prime Minister Naji al-Utri .

A ground-breaking ceremony for Friendship Dam to be constructed by Turkey and Syria on River Assi took place in southern province of Hatay.

The Dam

The dam, which is estimated at $28.5 million, will be constructed on the Assi (Orontes) River, which flows from Lebanon to Syria and Turkey. The dam is designed to irrigate 10,000 hectares of agricultural fields and generate 16 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
