Egyptian Interior Minister Mahmoud Wagdy told Al Jazeera that 17000 inmates escaped from Egyptian prisons
Inmates reportedly escaped from at least four jails across the country, including suspected Islamic extremists and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist opposition group. After one jailbreak at the Abu Zaabal prison on the outskirts of Cairo, locals told reporters that 18 people had been killed when gangs fought a six-hour gun battle with guards to free jailed associates.
