The US is worried about Syria’s support of Hezbollah and its attempts to intimidate the Lebanese government, US State Department spokesperson Philip Crowley said Friday , the Kuwaiti News Agency (KONA) reported.

Crowley also said that Syria’s attempts to provide Hezbollah with arms violate Lebanon’s sovereignty.

“If Syria wants to change its relations with the US, it has to improve its political performance.”

  5. The Syrian ambassador, Bashar Jaafari, rejected the American position, noting that the latest United Nations situation report presented to the Security Council on Wednesday had cited no evidence of such weapons smuggling.

Mr. Jaafari countered by saying that of all 15 members of the Security Council, the United States was alone in reacting negatively to what he called the positive role Syria is playing in Lebanon and the region at large. The American statement was in “full contradiction with a lot of facts,” he said, adding that by contradicting the United Nations report the United States was undermining the United Nations and the elected government of Lebanon.

“la raison du plus fort est toujours la meilleure…”
the logic of the strongest always prevails.

unfortunatly, this is the modus operandi for all those rulers dealing with politics in the middle east.

lately some groups that seemed to have learned well this lesson and using the pretext of the resistance, felt they made the transition from being an underdog years ago to becoming a major bully who has been trying to force this kind of reasoning down lebanese throats with the help of some rogue regional players.

people know deep down all the truth pertaining to the assasination of late pm hariri minus few insignificant details. the stl is going to technically and legally confirm what the people suspected from day one.

but all these issues remain relatively easy compared to what comes next ie who is going to enforce any indictments or rulings issued by stl and how???

lebanon is plagued with a weak government undermined from within by powerful adversaries considered armed and dangerous who might have been involved with a series of political assassinations; coupled with uncooperating outmanned and outgunned law enforcement agencies, always over calculating before taking the smallest decision for fear of provoking sectarian strife.

the sad failed state of the lebanese government and its institutions will no doubt be perceived as an open invitation to all the regional players and others to get involved in lebanon thus rendering a messy situation a lot messier.

so lebanon, left alone in its current situation, will never be able to solve this existential problem.

thus, a major international effort on the political and even the military level is urgently needed to address the post stl indictment situation.
