According to An Nahar newspaper the issue of proportional representation in the Lebanese Municipal elections was subjected to heated discussions and disagreements during Monday’s cabinet meeting which made it difficult to reach a consensus agreement . Acc ording to An Nahar sources this amendment could face the same fate as the issue of direct election of the mayors and their deputies and the issue that mayors should hold a college degree. ..both issues are now dead .
FPM’s Minister Gebran Bassil suggested dividing Beirut into 3 districts instead of proportional representation , while PM Saad Hariri said he has no objection against proportional representation if the majority goes for it
