Al-Hayat reported Tuesday that French position that U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559 cannot be eliminated was made during recent talks between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Lebanese counterpart Michel Suleiman
Al-Hayat political sources told it that Sarkozy has reportedly informed Suleiman during talks in Paris last Saturday that the international community understands Lebanon’s stance regarding Hezbollah arms and the referral of the issue to the national dialogue.
“However, a demand for abolishing of Resolution 1559 is difficult to achieve,” Sarkozy was quoted as telling Suleiman.
“This is an international resolution that cannot be eliminated,” Sarkozy reportedly stressed, pointing to the “arms” resolution clause which is not yet implemented.
Speaker Nabih Berri who, along with Syria and Hezbollah have been calling for abolishing of Resolution 1559 told As Safir : “I have a surprise about 1559”, but did not disclose the details of his surprise
