Hezbollah chief Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah accused the Islamist extremists of being behind the security incidents targeting his Shiite party in recent months and warned that if bombings continue, “Lebanon will be on the edge of the abyss.”
“We know by name those who launched the rockets at Dahieh on May 26 and who set the car bomb in Dahieh on July 7… they belong to specific Takfiri groups,” Nasrallah said Friday in a TV speech that addressed a ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the end of 2006 July War.
Nasrallah further said that “all information points to the same groups” as being responsible for Thursday’s massive car bomb in Dahieh that left at least 24 people dead.
“There is a high probability takfiri groups are responsible for yesterday’s bombing,” he said, adding however that Israel, the US and regional powers use radical Islamist groups for their own purposes.
But just as we won in all our wars against Israel, we will win the battle against terrorism and Takfiris, Nasrallah said and added: If the battle against Takfiris required this, I will personally go fight in Syria, so will Hezbollah for the sake of the Syrian people and the country’s cause, which is Palestine.”
Nasrallah also said the Thursday’s car bomb between contained over 100 kilograms of explosives , while the Lebanese security sources told LBC television today that 55 to 60 kilograms of TNT were used in the bomb Nasrallah also admitted that his party could not yet determine whether it had been a suicide operation.
The Hezbollah chief praised caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn and his announcement earlier in the day that Lebanese army intelligence had arrested a suspect for the July 7 car bomb in Dahieh’s Bir al-Abed that left over 50 people injured.
Nasrallah warned that if the bombings continue, “Lebanon will be on the edge of the abyss.”
“We must understand the threat Lebanon is confronting… those who are destroying the region have taken a decision to destroy Lebanon,” the Hezbollah leader warned, calling on state security institutions to take proactive measures to round up terrorist cells in the country.
Nasrallah reiterated earlier statements that Islamist extremists did not represent the Sunni sect.
Hezbollah has been widely criticized by Lebanese and Arab leaders for supporting the Alawite-dominated Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad against the mostly Sunni Syrian rebels who are trying to overthrow the 40 year old dictatorship . Thousands of Hezbollah fighters are fighting in Syria alongside the forces loyal to Assad and hundreds of them have been brought in coffins for burial in Lebanon. Alawites or Alawism is an offshoot of Shiite Islam and constitute the second largest Islamic sect in Syria and are mainly located in northwestern Syria
