Travel ban imposed on Egyptian president, top allies

EGYPTIAN security forces have imposed a travel ban on President Mohamed Morsi and several top Islamist allies over their involvement in a prison escape in 2011, security officials say.

Airport officials confirmed to AFP that they had received orders to prevent the leaders — including Morsi, Muslim Brotherhood chief Mohammed Badie and his deputy Khairat al-Shater — from travelling abroad.

A top aide to President Mohamed Morsi, Essam al-Haddad, slammed what he called a “military coup” after an army ultimatum and the travel ban on the president and his Islamist allies.

“For the sake of Egypt and for historical accuracy, let’s call what is happening by its real name: Military coup,” Haddad, Morsi’s national security adviser, said in a statement on Facebook.

As tensions mounted and crowds poured into the streets to demand Morsi’s resignation, Haddad said: “As I write these lines I am fully aware that these may be the last lines I get to post on this page.”
