Reformists to unite behind one candidate in Iran’s race

Mohammad Ali Najafi, the spokesman of the coalition working group of reformists, said on Sunday that reformists intend to seriously contest the presidential election, and a seven-man working group is working on the formation of a coalition to support a single candidate.

The results of the meetings will be officially announced by June 8, he added.

However, reformist presidential candidate Mohammad Reza Aref says he has no intention of forming a coalition with rival candidate Hassan Rohani in the upcoming election.

In an interview with the Mehr News Agency on Sunday, Aref said he would stay in the presidential election “to the end.”

Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, Hassan Rohani, who is the president of the Center for Strategic Research of the Expediency Council, MP Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, former Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati, Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, former First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref, and former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Gharazi are the eight candidates running for president.

On June 14, Iranians will cast their ballots at over 66,000 polling stations across the country in the nation’s 11th presidential election. Expatriates will also be able to vote at 285 polling stations that will be set up in foreign countries.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election.
