About 17 Lebanese fighters were killed in Syria on Friday reported local media outlets, but there are conflicting reports as where and how this might have happened .

AFP said that 17 Lebanese Sunni fighters were killed in Syria’s Tall Kalakh border area in an ambush carried out by regime forces.

But a security source said that the victims were fighting alongside the Syrian opposition.

On the other hand Sky News reported that the Lebanese were killed as they were trying to enter Syria.

Lebanon Files reported the 17 Lebanese Islamists were killed in an ambush by the Syrian army in the province of Homs.

MTV reported that the Islamists come for from the northern city of Tripoli and neighboring towns and that tensions were high in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood of the northern capital because 2 of people killed were from the prominent Srour family in Tripoli.

Update 1:

Voice of Lebanon reported that no one was killed in Tall Kalakh from the Srour family. VOL added that one of the members of the srour family is in the custody of the Free Syrian Army.

Future Movement official Mustafa Alloush said none of the Lebanese that were killed in Tall kalakh Syria belong to the Future Movement

Update 2

Future MPs Khaled al-Daher and Mouin Merhebi commented to NOW and about the Lebanese that were killed in Syria on Friday.

MP Daher said that young Sunni men from the Bab al-Tebbeneh neighborhood in Tripoli were trying to enter Syria “to support the rebels especially after witnessing Hezbollah’s support for the Syrian regime.”

However, he said that “they were not armed, and they were killed on Syrian land. Also, they are not affiliated with any political party,” adding: “The Future bloc does not wish for anyone to go participate in the Syrian battle alongside the rebels.”

Merhebi told NOW that the incident took place while the men “were on a bus.”

“Some of them became martyrs and others managed to escape,” he said, adding “[These men must have] considered that it is their rightful duty to stand up for the women and children [who are being killed by the Syrian regime] every day.”

Twenty-two young men ( not 17 as has been reported earlier ), including a Palestinian, from the Lebanese city of Tripoli were killed reportedly on Friday in the Syrian border town of Tal Kalakh, a Lebanese security source and an Islamist leader said.
