The United Nations has agreed to deploy trainers to Cairo in the coming days to help the Arab League team of monitors in Syria do their job better.
The training will done by specialists from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, according to a UN spokeswoman who spoke on condition of anonymity citing the world body’s policy. They will probably be deployed after the Arab League hold their ministerial meeting on Jan. 22.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said today casualties from the conflict in Syria have reached unacceptable levels.
“We cannot let the situation continue this way,” Ban told a conference in Abu Dhabi. “This is my urgent appeal.”
Syrian security forces have extended their attacks on demonstrators during the Arab League’s two-week deployment of observers, killing about 400 people in that period, United Nations political chief Lynn Pascoe has told the 15-member Security Council.
Under an agreement with the league, Syria’s government promised to withdraw military and security forces from urban areas, release political prisoners and allow observers into the country to monitor implementation of the accord.
