Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said on Sunday that he will refuse to implement the electoral law proposed by the Orthodox gathering and adopted by the Maronite leaders last Friday during their meeting in Bkirki
“I will not sign off on such a law ,” Charbel told New TV
The electoral law that was proposal by the Orthodox Gathering and which was adopted by the Maronite leaders calls for each sect to elects its own lawmakers” to ensure fair representation at the parliament” .
Headed by Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai, the Friday meeting gathered rival politicians such as former Lebanese president and current Phalange party leader Amine Gemayel, Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea, the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement Michel Aoun and Marada Movement leader Suleiman Franjieh.
Charbel said that the( Orthodox) proposal “abolishes” the bill drafted by his ministry, which suggests that Lebanon should adopt the proportional representation system in its upcoming 2013 elections.
Lebanese parties are presently debating the electoral law for the upcoming 2013 parliamentary elections.
