Iran’s IRGC chief: Russia cares about its own interests, not Assad

IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari reaffirmed during a meeting with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other Iranian diplomats Iran’s commitment to Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

Jafari, however, acknowledged that Russia’s goals in Syria might differ from Iran’s regarding Assad, stating: “Our dear friend to the north, which has now come to Syria and is helping militarily, is pursuing its own national interests; it is possible… that [Russia] is not looking for Assad to remain. In any case, [Russia] has arrived…and it is helping the resistance front.”

Jafari also promised that Iran will continue to support the Houthi movement in Yemen.

Khamenei meanwhile stressed that foreign countries should not dictate the future of Syria’s “governing system.” Khamenei instead claimed that “the solution to the Syrian issue is elections and for this action, war and unrest should first end…” The Supreme Leader also ruled out negotiating with the U.S. on regional issues, echoing his earlier statement to the same effect on October 7.

    Now THAT is newsworthy. And Iran kept saying they are not involved in Yemen.

      lying is the regime’s policy .
      Iran has been saying all along that it is not involved in Syria’s war, but according to a report I read today 60 Iranian generals have already been killed in Iran since the war started .
      Now this is a startling number .
      i am sure Iran has other ranks in the army
      The question is how many Iranian troops died in Syria so far

        Well .. just calling people ‘General Mucky-Muck’ doesn’t make a General.
        Assume they move up in rank fast as their ‘units’ fall around them. 😉
        ‘Last Man Standing’ is ‘General’, and goes on to be a ‘sender’ of other units.

        I was amazed at number of high ranking officers being killed there. Either Iranian generals are manning machine guns in bunkers in Aleppo or every dude in the Guard gets a posthumous field promotion so that his family gets a good pension. No other explanation.
