WIND TURBINESBEIRUT,  LEBANON-  The ministry of energy and water has received 42 expressions of interest (EOIs) to develop up to 300MW of wind power.

The projects must be located in the Akkar, Mount Lebanon, Bekaa or Southern governates.

Companies from more than 20 countries registered their interest, including Denmark’s Ramboll; H2Air and VSB Energies Nouvelles from France; Germany’s ABO Wind; XEMC Darwind from the Netherlands; China’s Dongfang Electric and Goldwind; Iran’s Mapna; Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and Alcazar Energy of Dubai.

Among the turbine manufacturers, Vestas is a partner in six consortia, while SGRE is in four.

The ministry expects to launch the main tender during the International Beirut Energy Forum 2018 towards the end of September.

This is the second tender launched in Lebanon, following a first round of 202MW awarded in 2017.

That ran into problems when the government decided to renegotiate the tariff. However, the developers eventually agreed to $107.5/MWh under a 20-year term.
