The sister of the controversial former deputy mayor of Auburn, Salim Mehajer, has been crowned Miss Lebanon Australia.
Mary Mehajer was a late entrant in the contest, only joining after the other contestants had already been involved for a month or more.
“I came a bit late to the competition because I was hesitant to actually be involved from the beginning,” she told 7.30.
“I felt I was very awkward and very stiff, and I didn’t think I would actually fit in.
“As soon as I came to the competition, all the girls were so beautiful, they helped me out with the dance — at one stage the choreographer was actually moving my arms for me because I was too shy to even lift up my arms for the dance.”
“I’m very overwhelmed,” Salim Mehajer told 7.30.
“I can’t explain, it’s not the right time.
“Come see me tomorrow, probably about 7am in front of my house as you always do.”
The Mehajer brothers are among a number of sponsors of the event.
Some contestants and people connected to the pageant told 7.30 after the event that they believed Mary Mehajer was not the most outstanding contestant.
Salim Mehajer came to public notice when his lavish wedding, complete with helicopters, closed down streets in Sydney’s west.
He is currently facing more than 70 electoral fraud charges along with another sister, Fatima.
He is also, along with some other Auburn councillors, the subject of an inquiry into development decision by the council.
That council has been suspended by the New South Wales Government.
